Who hasn't grasped and half-guessed at which password you used with which online account?  Paper lists aren't a good solution because they get messy, and they might not be with you when you need them.

An easy solution is to create a single document in your Keep and Share account and use it to store a simple list of your account names and passwords.   You only need these passwords when you're online, and since your Keep and Share account is always available to you from any Internet-connected computer, you're guaranteed you'll have your passwords close at hand whenever you need the list.

And, since your Keep and Share account is securely protected and private to you, rest assured your password list will be safe from prying eyes.  Just be sure to leave the 'Share With' controls on this document set to their default, which is completely private to you.

A security note:  KeepandShare's privacy policy commits us to securing & safeguarding all your information, including any sensitive information.  That said, we want to point out a few simple safeguards when using KeepandShare or any consumer web service:
  • A good practice is to not write down the literal password, but instead specific hints that only you can readily make sense of.  A sample would be: "password5 = last 4 digits of favorite phone number + favorite pet name"
  • For your most sensitive accounts (e.g., online banking), our suggestion is that this information not be noted in any computer files, online or on your PC, but instead written down on paper in a secure location in your home or office.  Remember, that all computer systems and networks are subject to security violations.

This is what I have done, both on paper and in a form on the computer:

Website name        Username              Password         Comments
examplesite.com     codeforuser1          pinintpin         secret question is pet name

everything is coded so only I know what it means.  Some sites require capitals, numbers and lower case in a password.  I would then put a capital in the place in the password code, e.g.  pinIntpin.  Only you know what your pin is and what initials or word you would use, etc.

I have also learned from experience not to use a username that is the same as your email address.  Hackers assume you will do this, after all, that is how you got your email address to begin with.  If they can hack your email account, they can get all sorts of personal info, including the ability to change passwords on other accounts.

We appreciate the last 2 user comments regarding security matters.  We agree security is very important, especially for passwords.  Thank you both for speaking up.  A few points:
  • KeepandShare's privacy policy commits us to securing & safeguarding all your information, including any sensitive information.
  • If your password is to an important account (e.g., especially financial accounts), our suggestion is that you probably should not have it in any computer file, whether on KeepandShare, another website, or on your PC.  If a password is so sensitive that it needs to be encrypted, we would suggest you instead keep it written down in a secure location in your home or office.  Heaven knows PCs are subject to spyware etc.  If you are sophisticated enough to encrypt information, great, but we believe many KeepandShare users do not have the sophistication to encrypt.
  • When you do write down passowrds (in KeepandShare or anywhere), a good practice is to not write down the literal password, but instead specific hints that only you can readily make sense of.  A sample would be: "password5 = last 4 digits of favorite phone number + favorite pet name"
For most of us, while we have several login password to really critical financial accounts - and these you might want to only keep written on paper, but we also have dozens or scores of various web accounts that are not really that sensitive but we need to keep track of.

We'll revise this User Corner article to make these points a bit more clearly.  Thank you both for speaking up.

Hello fellow KeeepandShare account holders,

First off, I am new to KeepandShare but I have some experience in the Digital Asset Management (DAM) industry, having worked most recently for AOL/TW, testing and supporting the Xdrive product offering. I can tell you that storing your digital assets now and in the future, will continue to be an issue for consumers. The reason of course is because we continue to move forward with technology improvements and companies will continue to design and build product offerings that address those consumers needs in this continious evolving DAM world.

Consumers will have more and more offerings, both 'Free' and paid services, so managing Usernames and Passwords might become a hassle for some. The suggestion to store your Usernames and Passwords with KeepandShare while as a whole is a good idea and not out of the realm of a 'Real' need for KeeepandShare account holders to need to have 24/7 access to the file, this could be risky.

So my suggestion is to encrypt the file (.doc/.xls/.pdf/etc) before you Upload it to your KeeepandShare account, if KeeepandShare pernits that file type to be Uploaded into your KeeepandShare account. Now this approach might not provide a means for you to view your file while logged into your KeeepandShare account but you'll be able to login to your KeeepandShare account and then download the file to your PC and then use the same encryption application to unencrypt the file that contains that much needed Username and Password.

If all that work sounds like a hassle, then you'll need to consider if KeeepandShare has access to those prized Username and Passwords file types and will by the mere fact of Uploading that file to your KeeepandShare account put those services that contain those Uploaded Usernames and Passwords at risk.

Look into Personal Information Managers (PIM) or Username Password Managers online many Freeware applications on the netif all this sounds like more work then it's worth doing.

Until Next time!

-Cheers

Not a good idea!  Keep and Share isn't secure.  Anyone can capture your packets and view your passwords or they can just hack keep and share.

A brilliant idea. I am going to upload my login/password word file in keepand share.

Great idea!  I wouldn't have thought of this, but it makes total sense. Remembering log-ins is a real pain, and I'm sure this will help.

Keep of the great work, KeepAndShare

I do exactly what this says.  I keep all my user names and passwords for various online accounts in keepandshare.  Then, if I forget one while online, I can access them from any computer.  It's fast and easy, and they're all in one place.
