Making Your Own Prom Dress:
Create a Prom Dress That's Unique & Affordable

You've heard the tales for as long as you can remember: the nightmare of several girls showing up to their prom in the same dress. Short of flying to Paris to purchase your prom dress, what can you do to prevent it? And what if you're on a tight budget? Can you still have an awesome and unique prom dress? There is an answer for both of these dilemmas: make your own prom dress.

If you have some sewing talent, making your own prom dress is a way to make sure you have the exact prom dress you want, and that you will be the only one who has it. Of course if you're like some of us who can't sew their way out of a paper towel, you can still ensure that your prom dress is totally unique by having a seamstress make it. Just make sure you give her plenty of time to complete it.

If you (or someone else) is making your prom dress, you should first get an idea of what kind of dress you'd like, and then find a similar pattern. Even if the pattern isn't exactly what you wanted, if it's close, it shouldn't be too difficult for a skilled seamstress to make a few adjustments.

Next, you should choose the material. If you are having someone else make your prom dress, you may want to consult with them on your fabric choice. Along with the fabric, you should choose any embellishments you want, such as beads, sequin or bows. You'll be surprised at just how creative you can get when you're not limited by having to purchase a prom dress that's already made.

Another option for "making" your own prom dress is to purchase a very simple dress (either short or long, since both are "in" for prom 2008) and add your own details. A simple slip dress can become quite stunning when you add your own extras, such as beads or sequin and then pair it with fabulous shoes and jewelry.

Make sure your prom dress is truly one-of-a-kind by making it yourself or by simply embellishing a plain one. You'll not only be truly original, but you'll save money in the process.
