7 Baby Shower Mistakes...and How to Avoid Them

What are the seven most common baby shower mistakes? You'll find out below, along with simple ways to avoid them.

If you've never hosted a baby shower - or even if you've hosted dozens - there are some mistakes you should be aware of. It will make the planning much less stressful and everyone involved will have lots more fun.

Inviting Too Many Guests
The saying, "The more the merrier," doesn't always apply to baby showers. Why? It's easy for the event (that's supposed to be a fun celebration) to get out of hand. It's understandable that you don't want to offend or alienate anyone, but think about this - who is this event for? Mommy to be, of course! When creating the baby shower guest list ask the following question: How Well Does Mommy to Be Know this Person?

Going Over Budget
Budgets are guidelines and not set in stone. So I'm talking about going WAY over budget. It is so easy to get carried away with all the adorable decorations, favors, games, gifts, etc. However, you can create a beautiful baby shower without blowing the bank.

Not Enough Food
There is nothing worse than attending a baby shower and there isn't enough food. Can you imagine a room full of cranky, hungry guests? Who wants to attend that baby shower? Always err on the side of having too much food. You can always freeze the leftovers for mommy to be to reheat after baby is born.

Serving Food Pregnant Women Shouldn't Eat
Keep dietary requirements of mommy to be in mind when planning her baby shower. Can you imagine attending a party in your honor and you can't enjoy the food? Search the internet for specific examples.

Mixing Too Many Themes
It can be easy to create a mish mash of a baby shower by going overboard. For example, Judy planned a baby shower for her daughter. She decided on a teddy bear theme with blue colors (for a boy). For each of her 40 guests she ordered candles, bath salts, and chocolate baby shower favors. Only the chocolates actually had blue teddy bears on them. Having 3 different baby shower favors seemed like she couldn't make up her mind.

Short Notice
A big etiquette taboo is sending the invitation out too late. No one likes last minute invitations. Or the thought that they were invited as an after-thought. You will have more success if you focus on getting those invitations out in a timely manner. It gives the guests enough time to arrange their schedule and pick out the gift. It also helps them have a positive viewpoint on how the baby shower is being run.

Choosing Awkward Games
Try to avoid any games that are in bad taste, could offend or embarrass anyone. Also be mindful of the movement limitations of the mom-to-be and any guests who may have physical limitations. It's always a good idea to have back-up games ready, just in case you're getting a bad "game vibe" from anyone at the shower.

By avoiding these 7 baby shower mistakes, you'll be able to pull off a fabulous baby shower with style and ease!
