03/19/2010 Final Number of the Day

Today the White House released the last in its series of numbers to make the case for passing health reform -- as well as a video highlighting some of the numbers they've used over the last two weeks to show why reform can't wait.

Today's number is 32 million. That's the number of uninsured Americans who will have access to affordable coverage under the President's plan. It's also a little more than the populations of Ohio, Virginia, Kentucky, and Arizona -- combined.

Learn more about previous Health Reform by the Numbers.

3. Health care premiums are rising 3 times faster than wages. And 3 million is the decrease in the number of middle-income earners who received health insurance from their employers from 2000 to 2008.

50/50. If you're an American under age 65, you have a 50/50 chance of finding yourself without health insurance coverage at some point in the next decade.

1. One in every six dollars in the U.S. economy is spent on health care today. If we do nothing, in 30 years, 1 out of every three dollars in our economy will be tied up in the health care system.

41. That's the number of leading economists -- including three Nobel Prize winners -- who sent a letter to President Obama and Congress yesterday urging swift passage of health reform to rein in out-of-control costs. It is also the percentage of adults under age 65 who struggled with medical debt, had trouble paying medical bills, or faced both during a recent year.

625. That's the number of people who lost their health insurance EVERY hour last year.

8. That's the number of people every minute who are denied coverage, charged a higher rate, or otherwise discriminated against because of a pre-existing condition. It's also the number of lobbyists hired by special interests to influence health reform for every member of Congress in 2009.

$1,125. That's the average premium for employer-sponsored family coverage per month last year. Annually, it adds up to $13,375 -- roughly the amount someone earning a minimum wage makes.

03/19/2010 OFA Supporters Make Their Voices Heard for Reform

With just days before a vote on health reform, OFA supporters in North Carolina, Wisconsin, Iowa, West Virginia, and states across the country organized events to show members of Congress that their constituents support reform.

The North Carolina News and Observer reported:

About 40 people marched to U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge's office in downtown Raleigh this morning to deliver a stack of stories from state residents who want health care reform.

The Lillington Democrat, who is said to be undecided on his health care vote, has been the focus of a lot of attention this week.

Members of Organizing for America, a group that backs President Barack Obama's agenda, said they delivered to Etheridge 10,000 stories from North Carolinians who want the health insurance changes.

"We wanted to make sure he knows that we had his back today," said Lindsay Siler, state director for Organizing for America.

03/19/2010 OFA Ad in USA Today Highlights the Millions of Americans Standing for Reform

Today, Organizing for America ran a full-page ad in USA Today to highlight a few of the millions of Americans who are standing up for health reform. The ad features photos of supporters with the names of who inspires them to fight for reform -- showing members of Congress and the public the real reasons we need to pass reform now.

A few news outlets took notice:

TechPresident:

Organizing for America ran  a full-page ad (pdf) in today's USA Today, they report, that makes use of the photos sent in through their online photo-uploader -- an interesting bit of online/offline synergy.

ABC's The Note:

New from Organizing for America: Personalizing the fight. A full-page ad in USA Today urges people to put themselves in photos they send Congress. “Tell Congress why you’re standing up for health reform.”

The Plum Line:

Organizing for America goes up with a full page ad in USA Today highlighting a new tool they’ve deployed that allows voters to send a direct and personal message, complete with photo, to members of Congress.

03/19/2010 Momentum for Reform Grows as More Representatives Announce They'll Vote 'Yes'

With a vote expected this Sunday, momentum continues to build as more and more members of Congress announce that they will vote 'yes' on health insurance reform.

This morning, Ohio representative John Boccieri announced that he will vote in support of reform, and yesterday Colorado representative Betsy Markey and Rep. Bart Gordon of Tennessee both announced that they'll be voting 'yes' on the health reform bill as well.

The Washington Post reported on Rep. Boccieri decision to vote ‘yes’:

Boccieri said he was also inspired by the story of Natoma Canfield -- the leukemia patient from Ohio whose plight was highlighted recently by President Obama. He said it reminded him of his own mother's battle with breast cancer.

"I want my mom to know that I'm standing up today and doing what I believe is right," he said.

The New York Times has more on Reps. Gordon and Markey's 'yes' votes:

Representative Bart Gordon, Democrat of Tennessee, cited the deficit-reduction figure in announcing Thursday that he would switch his vote and support the new bill. Mr. Gordon, a member of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition, voted against the House bill in November.

Another Blue Dog Democrat who voted no in November, Representative Betsy Markey of Colorado, said she too would support the new measure.

OFA volunteers' calls are making an incredible difference in building the momentum toward passing historic health reform. If you haven't already called your representative, you can use our online tool to call now.
