10/04/2008 Voter Registration: "The final push"

8/16 Philadelphia India Independence Day Voter Reg Drive

State registration deadlines are coming up fast. In a many of states – including important battlegrounds like Colorado, Florida, and Pennsylvania – voter registration ends Monday, October 6.

Voter registration will make a huge the difference in this election. Virginia has registered nearly 350,000 new voters this year. North Carolina added 600,000 new voters. And 80,000 new Democratic voters will be going to the polls in Nevada.

And that’s in no small part thanks to you.

Our supporters have been on the ground working tirelessly in every state, registering hundreds of thousands of new voters – and having a great time doing it. Here are a few of the comments from our blog:

Becky in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida says:

I'm handing out flyers telling folks how to register to vote. Doin' all I can to turn Florida blue and having the time of my life! In all my 60 years I've never felt so happy or so alive.

Ethel in Harrisburg, PA:

Just came from volunteering. I feel great! I did something for the campaign today. Everyone was upbeat and looking forward to the final push with registering people.

And a new voter, Barbara in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, weighs in:

OK -- here's one Obama vote from Florida! I'm 53 and have just today registered to vote for the first time. I'm excited and can't wait to cast my very first ballot for Barack Obama!

People like Barbara are the reason you’re out there in parks and on street corners registering new voters. Because there are still thousands and thousands of Obama supporters out there who still aren’t registered.

If you can spare a few hours tomorrow or Monday, take a clipboard and go out into your community to give those supporters a voice in this election.

10/04/2008 Road Blog: Barack in Newport News, Virginia

"It is time to do something different about health care." -- Sen. Barack Obama

Virginians came out en masse to Victory Landing Park in Newport News to hear Barack Obama discuss his plan for healthcare in America. It was an appropriate setting -- one of the origin stories for the name "Newport News" is that a group of original settlers who had been lost shared the "good news" on their return to settlement and safety.

The 18,000 folks who attended the rally today (according to Deputy Fire Marshal Captain Minga) were seekers of a different sort. They were looking for answers on healthcare, one of the most difficult issues of our time. Millions of Americans are currently left uninsured and millions more are paying more than they can afford for basic coverage.

Today's introducer, Kathryn Devocht, is on the front lines of the healthcare battle. Kathryn is an operating room nurse. She is witness to the dramatic increase in the numbers of patients who have been dropped from the care provided them by their employers, sometimes without even being told about it. She sees those who still have insurance unable to pay their premiums. Kathryn is supporting Barack Obama because she feels that Barack will be able to bring change to Washington and will make helping these struggling folks a priority of his administration.

10/04/2008 Three Days Left Ohio

Voter registration deadlines are coming up fast. Mississippi's registration deadline is today, and states like Michigan, Florida, Georgia and Indiana have deadlines this Monday, October 6.

Ohio also has a voter registration deadline this Monday, however, Ohio is the first state to start early voting in person. It started last Tuesday, September 30 and ends November 3. The great thing about early voting in Ohio is being able to register and vote in one stop.

This is an extraordinary opportunity to get the votes Barack needs to win in Ohio. And since Ohio is a key battleground state -- and played a pivotal role in the last presidential contest -- winning in Ohio could help us secure a national victory.

There are only three days left to register and vote all at once. Just three days to make all the difference in this election.

That's why we need all Ohioans to go to their local Board of Elections this weekend. Ohio residents need to bring their friends, their family members and their neighbors to take advantage of the One-Stop Early Voting that will end soon.

Find your early vote location and vote for Barack today.

10/04/2008 Change Means: Healthcare for All Americans

Healthcare
is an issue that many Americans care about. Parents worry about having insurance that covers their children, seniors worry about being able to pay for prescriptions and others worry about having pre-existing conditions.

Jason in New York has Multiple Sclerosis but unfortunately does not have health insurance. He is paying for medical bills out of pocket and can't afford physical therapy. He's supporting Barack Obama because Barack has a health care plan that will work for people and not the insurance and drug companies. Jason explains his story and how Barack will help him in a YouTube video.

Barack's plan provides affordable, accessible healthcare for all Americans, builds on the existing healthcare system, and uses existing providers, doctors and plans to implement the plan. Under the Obama-Biden plan, patients will be able to make health care decisions with their doctors, instead of being blocked by insurance company bureaucrats. Under the plan, if you like your current health insurance, nothing changes, except your costs will go down by as much as $2,500 per year.

Barack will require insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions so all Americans regardless of their health status or history can get comprehensive benefits at fair and stable premiums. He will create a new Small Business Health Tax Credit to help small businesses provide affordable health insurance to their employees.

A healthcare plan that promotes public health and looks out for ordinary Americans is the change Washington needs.
