50th Birthday Party Planning   Article 3 in 13 on Planning Major Birthday Parties

You're Invited: Invitations for Grownup Birthday Partiess

Ok - you've decided on the birthday party theme and chosen the date, time and location. Now what? It's time to send invitations, of course! Whether you purchase them, make them or print them from your computer, just remember: the invitations set the tone for the upcoming birthday festivities.

If you choose to purchase invitations, you can find a variety of party invitations as mass merchants, card shops and party supply stores that cater to a wide array of different themes. Of course, if you prefer to make the invitations, craft supply stores offer a wealth of materials and ideas - but just make sure you have the time to make them. Many people also choose to use printable invitations. There are many sources online that offer free printable invitations that print beautifully from your home printer. Whether you choose to purchase invitations, make your own or use printable invitations, there are a few things that should be kept in mind.

Theme
At this point, you should have determined the theme of the birthday party, so the invitations should provide a nice preview to the party itself. If you're going with a casino theme, look for invitations that have dice, money, cards, etc., on them. If it's a tropical theme, try to incorporate palm trees, umbrella drinks or sandy shores.

All invitations should include important information such as date, time and location in an easy-to-read format. You should also include directions to the party, an RSVP phone number and/or an email address. If you'd like the guests to bring something unique, the invitations are the perfect place to convey that. Also, if you don't want guests to bring gifts, you can include a simple statement such as, "No gifts, please."

The Early Worm Gets the RSVP
As a courtesy to the party guests, you should try to mail the invitations 4-6 weeks in advance. This gives people plenty of time to RSVP, purchase gifts (if necessary) and make travel and/or child care arrangements.

Less is More
If you're not really having a theme (besides "Happy Birthday") or you're not really finding the invitations that are right for the birthday party you're throwing, there's nothing wrong with using simple, tasteful invitations that don't have a particular theme. The guests will be happy with any invitation, as long as the important information is easily readable.

Whether you purchase, make or print the party invitations, remember to send them early and include all pertinent information to assure the best possible turnout for the birthday party you're hosting.
