Where does the name 'Easter' come from?
What comes to mind when you hear "Easter"? Easter vacation, Easter chocolates, Easter flowers, Easter baskets, or Easter quotes? You might wonder where the name Easter comes from.
There are many traditions associated with Easter, including exchanging Easter gifts and Easter gift baskets, including Easter eggs and Easter chocolate.
The word Easter derives from the Anglo-Saxon (early English), where the word 'Eostre' was the name of April: 'Eostre-monath,', or the month-of-openings. Since Easter was typically celebrated in April, early English Christians began naming the Christian holiday after 'Eostremonath'. It's fun to note that Esostre' was a Anglo-Saxon goddess. The Goddess Eostre had rituals focused on new beginnings, symbolized by the Easter egg, and fertility, symbolized by the Easter bunny. What a cool Goddess!
In earlier times, Easter was called 'Pascha', a name stemming from the Jewish festival of Passover.
