iCalendar Example: Detailed Jewish Holidays

You can use KeepandShare's ability to subscribe to external 'iCalendar subscription feeds' to bring in detailed information from other calendar systems.

A good example of using an external calendar to add detailed schedule information is adding detailed Jewish holiday information. A good source for this information is www.hebcal.com.

Paid Account Only Feature: this help screen shows how to add a detailed external Hebrew calendar using iCalendar feeds. iCalendar feeds and subscriptions are only available in Premium accounts. Both free and paid KeepandShare accounts can turn on basic Jewish Holidays using KeepandShare's holidays feature.

Here are the steps to add information from hebcal.com to your KeepandShare calendar. The process is similar for any other external feed.

Step One - Get the URL for your External Feed

Pick one of these calendar feeds, click in the gray box and copy the URL feed to your clipboard:

Basic Jewish Holidays:

All Jewish Holidays:

Other Feeds:

If you'd like an iCalendar feed that is different from the above, just go directly to Hebcal.com. Click on the 'Calendar' link in the top black bar. Click 'Custom Calendar' in the pull down. Then click 'Preview Calendar'. Click 'Apple iCal -- it opens up, and then right click on the 'Subscribe To' link and do a copy link command. Now you have a link you can paste into the KeepandShare iCalendar subscription field.

Step Two - Set Up the Feed in KeepandShare

  1. Log in and view your calendar.
  2. Click 'Customize & Share' on the blue bar.
  3. Click 'Manage iCalendar Subscriptions' in the right column (more help on iCalendar subscription).
  4. Paste the URL from step 1 into the URL field (you may need to use the Feed 2 fields).
  5. Give the subscription a name such as 'Heb Cal' in the Title field.
  6. In the drop down choose 'Update Monthly'.
  7. Click 'Save and Exit'.
  8. You should now be viewing the Customize & Share screen again.
  9. Click 'Choose a calendar to overlay' in the right column (more help on calendar overlays).
  10. Click 'My Calendars and Subscriptions'.
  11. Click next to your subscription in the lower part of the list of your calendars & subscriptions.
  12. Click Continue and pick a color for your overlay and click Continue again.
  13. Click 'Save and Exit' to exit Customize & Share.
  14. If your new calendar overlay is not showing in your calendar, click "Customize and Share" again and check your link under "Manage icalendar Subscriptions". If you did not remove the leading "webcal://", your new overlay will not show up in your calendar.
