Settling Your Auto Insurance Claim
Are you having trouble settling your auto insurance claim? Or maybe your insurance company wants to settle, but you don't think it's a fair offer. Here are some options you can explore.
Speak to your agent.
Your insurance agent probably has some contacts within the company and may be able to find out what the hold up is.
Support your case.
Send a letter that details the reasons you are not satisfied. Make sure to include any supporting documents such as repair estimates or bills. Remember to include your claim number and contact information.
Review your policy.
Make sure you're aware of exactly what your auto insurance policy will cover. There's no use arguing over something that really isn't covered anyway.
Contact your state insurance department.
Explain your disagreement to a representative at your state insurance department, who may be able to offer advice or possible solutions.
Use an arbitrator.
An independent arbitrator who is familiar with auto insurance matters can decide if your settlement was fair. You can get your own arbitrator from the American Arbitrator Association (http://www.adr.org) or your insurance company may suggest one.
Consult an attorney.
As a last resort, you may want to contact an attorney who specializes in auto insurance. Your attorney may work on an hourly basis or a contingency basis, so be sure to get the attorney's fee structure in writing.
Once your claim has been settled, take some time to evaluate your auto insurance policy to make sure you're adequately protected against any future claims.
