So, Whose Last Name Are We Taking, Boo?

photo

I was listening to the radio the other day in Washington, DC, and I heard a story about the numbers of men changing their last names due to marriage. According to a site called Hitchswitch, which provides name changing services, since June 2011, five percent of their name changes have been men, with three percent taking their wives last names and 2 percent creating some hybrid of the two names.

How sweet.

For some odd reason, the topic of men taking a woman's last name is enough to start a full on argument. It seems like most people don't feel that strongly about it one way or another - or really never thought about it - until one person who does feel strongly (usually a man who's adamant that he'd never take a woman's last name) chimes in with reckless abandon. That's when the fun starts.

For the record, there's no way in hell I'd take my wife's last name. I don't even have a good, logical, or sound reason for this. I just won't do it. You can blame slavery, patriarchy, Lebron James, whatever. I don't even fancy myself as a traditionalist. I also don't believe in kids' last names being hyphenated. Shout outs to the Hyphen Mob out there.

Hi-fives and pimpslaps.

But I also wouldn't have a problem with my wife deciding to keep her last name either. I know that I've spent a long time developing my own personal brand and maybe she feels the same way. Perhaps she has some tie to her name that she doesn't want to let go of, which, I'm also okay with. Basically, I couldn't care less. Family is bigger than the last name you're rocking.

Incidentally, that could be an argument that a woman could use to attempt to get me to flipsides.  If her last name means that much more to her than mine does to me, then perhaps I should be willing to change my name for the sake of continuity and postal labels.

Eh eh.

To be objective here, I do think that the assumed practice of the family taking the man's last name is a bit archaic and unfair. I'm guessing it comes from a time when women had little rights and women were more or less entering into the man's family as opposed to creating a separate entity all their own. These are the breaks I guess. Except, I think that its been in practice so long that we're all warped into that way of thinking...so much so that it's not even tradition anymore, it's just the way things are. And it's like that from early age.

I'm a boy - one hangin' and two swangin' - and I can honestly say that I've never tried to match my last name up with a girls before. Especially not two hours into meeting them. I don't know a single woman who hasn't attempted to see what her first name would look like with her new beau's last name. Hell, women don't even have to KNOW the guy to play that game. I'm surprised Milton Bradley or Parker Brothers never came out with a game called "Last Name Change" for little girls to play at slumbers parties in Kansas.

All that to say, its interesting to me that these men would change their last name for their women. I'd call that real love but I'm guessing that in some way it's less about love and more about making a point. They're challenging the status quo of our patriarchal society and risking the ridicule (men can be as cruel as little kids towards their male friends) I suppose hoping that their act shows that they view their wives as equals and made a sound decision together. Either that or they're whipping boys.Or maybe their last name sucked SO much that they wanted it gone like 'Nsync in 1998. I'm hoping for the latter.

I'm judging. I should stop that. Bad P. Pun.

Either way, it's an interesting enough debate, though I suppose not that big a deal. Even if the general population number is five percent of men changing their name, that's still not huge. It is growing though...poor misguided men. I sure hope they're choosing wisely, my friend.

So what do you think? As a man, would you take your woman's last name? Women, do you plan to take your husband's name or do you want to keep yours and/or try to convince him to change his?
