“One Day”, a new single that pays homage to the great speech of Martin Luther King, is set to top the charts in the UK. The song by Hugh Alexander, released at a time when the debate about racial divisions and the Black Lives Matter movement have heightened, is a response to the George Floyd killing. “The song has also been hailed as homage to the great civil rights crusader, Martin Luther King’s iconic speech. It was released on the 18th of July, a day when, ironically two former civil rights colleagues, John Robert Lewis and CT Vivian, died.
“One Day”, which is available worldwide on various digital platforms, opens with an eerie clip from the iconic “I have a dream speech”
A recent review describes the song as a sublime piece of Neo Gospel soul, opening with the timeless and haunting MLK speech, underpinned with hypnotic basslines that weave through the rest of the song. Many stations have already got the song on rotation, describing it as a track that demands another listening to, immediately after it ends.
Hugh got onto the music scene at an early age. He was only 14 years old when he wrote his first song titled “Life is what you make it”. His first recording deal was with Funk Master Records, an opportunity that he was given by the late DJ Tony Williams while in his 20s. His ambitions to rise to the top and become a producer led him to work with several successful producers and artists. Although he took a break from his music career for some time, his passion never abated.
With this new comeback single, Hugh aims to inspire people, especially at a time when everyone is facing troubled times, occasioned by events that are believed to shape the world for the next few years. He also hopes to bring a fresh perspective to the Neo Soul genre. Hugh believes that “no matter what obstructions people may face in life, they should not give up. My music is for the troubled people who need to find their inner peace and then the world will heal”.
