Los Angeles, CA - September, 2020 - Composer Hanan Townshend debuts new score for ‘Book of Vision’, a story about hopes, fears and death. The Terrence Malick production marks Carlo Hintermann’s directorial debut.
"This film faces the reality of life and death, our hopes and fears, inspiring us to live life to the fullest," says Townshend of the time jumping journey that blurs the line between science and spirituality.
The production's international cast includes Charles Dance (“Game of Thrones”), Lotte Verbeek (“Outlander,” “The Borgias”), Sverrir Gudnason (“Borg vs McEnroe”), Isolda Dychauk (“The Borgias,” “Faust”) and Italian actor Filippo Nigro.
Far from a traditional scientific text, the book, written by Dr. Anmuth, contains the hopes, fears, and dreams of more than 1800 patients. The book is a manuscript that takes past and present and hurls them into an unexpected psychological vortex.
Townshend’s haunting score seamlessly uses pre-recorded arrangements and improvisations to take audiences through a deeply emotional musical experience that flutters between multiple realms.
For this film the composer created a collage-like score that weaves through different worlds.
The soundtrack is built around the saxophone, often riffing off inspiring classical pieces from the likes of Brahms and Liszt.”
“Compositionally, the original work is an extension of this world, blending clarinet, saxophone ensemble, and strings to enhance the woody soundscape. Federico Pascucci’s additions to the score also bring a lovely romantic heartbeat," says the Seattle based composer.
The soundtrack explores the darkest most poignant sentiments of humanity and spins them into an unexpected and truly original tapestry of sound.
Townshend is known for scoring many of Terrence Malick’s features including: “The Tree of Life”, “Knight of Cups”, and “To the Wonder.” This year he also became a major contender in the commercial music sector by scoring music for Google, Nike, American Express and Apple among others.
Hanan is currently scoring ‘On The Line,’ the true story of a Mexican orphanage, Casa Hogar, struggling to survive after Hurricane Odile hit in 2014.
