Leveling Casters - Choose The Right Caster Wheels

You are going to make a dollie. Now you will need wheels and casters. Don't just grab any set of wheels and casters you find. Before you decide on your purchase, you should consider the purpose of the dollie. You should consider many things. Number one, do not assume that any caster can support the movement you are making.

As a former employee in a music distribution company, I know firsthand what can happen when people get lazy or go cheap. Everything from small keyboards with attached stands, to large nine-foot grand pianos, you need to be ready for the environment you'll be working in. It is easy to see how expensive it is when you don't do your research or go cheap. One example: Our manager bought a dollie and assembled it with questionable plastic wheels.

The dollie was left in a truck on a cold winter night. We arrived at one our warehouses the next morning to pick up a seven-foot grand piano that had been custom made. My fellow worker and me used the dollie to move the piano into our truck. Unfortunately, one of the plastic casters broke from the extreme cold, causing the piano to be thrown to the ground. It was a terrible accident! The customer was furious. The customer was furious and the company had to accept the loss and purchase a new piano. In the end, the manager was not our manager. Before you buy casters, there are two important questions that you should ask.

1. What are you going to use it for? Yes, it's for moving but what else? Are they heavy?

2. Which environment will you be using it most often? Is it likely to be used outdoors as well as indoors, on tiles or on carpet?

It can be difficult to choose the right wheel/caster for your application, with so many options. Let's take a look at the most important steps before you buy caster wheels for any application.

Caster Capacity is the most important. Caster capacity refers to the maximum weight a caster can carry. To determine which caster capacity is best for your application, you need to use this formula.

Divide the total load that you will need the casters to support by the number of dollies you intend to attach them to. Next, choose the caster that has a caster capability greater than or equals your result.

You should consider the following guidelines regarding floor surface ratings and types of casters.

Hardwood Flooring: Polyurethane, Rubber and Semi-to Full Pneumatics are great, while Phenolic (molded polymer) and Polyolefin can be used. Iron and Semi-Steel should not be used.

Carpets: Polyurethane (semi to full pneumatics), Phenolic, and Polyolefin all work well. However, iron or semi-steel can cause damage and make it difficult to transfer.
