DEBT

Most Christians do not believe that debt is wrong.  What do you think?

Here are some verses which put debt in a very bad light...

Deu 15:6  For the LORD thy God blesseth thee, as he promised thee: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow; and thou shalt reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over thee.

The Israelites were to be lenders not borrowers.

Note:

(It was good to lend to a poor brother without interest and if he could not pay the debt was forgiven after 7 years so the debt was never a burden)  Deut 15:1

Debt was a curse of God unto the disobedient:

Deu 28:44  He [the stranger] shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him: he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail.

Deu 28:45  Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee,

The borrower is servant of the lender:

Pro 22:7  The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

It is obvious from the evidence all around us today that the borrower is the servant of the lender  - men spend much of their lives working to pay the interest on the mortgage on their houses, cars, vacations etc.

God warns that no man can serve two masters....

Luk 16:13  No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Paul said to owe no man anything -

Rom 13:8  Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

Well, these are some verses which seem to be very negative to debt. There is also the question of debt being based upon covetousness but to be fair there are no explicit statements in the Scriptures that debt is sin in itself.   If it was then God would not
have allowed the Israelites to lend to the poor.

So what do you think brethren...?
