Grade - Room 203

Welcome to fourth grade. I am very excited about this school year and look forward to working with your children. Fourth grade can be a very transitional year for many students due to the added work in the content areas of Science and Social Studies. Study skills will be a very important part of the curriculum and will be an integral part of our daily lessons. It is my goal to help each student learn how to study and value the importance of this skill. As you are aware students will be following a departmental schedule this year.  We are very excited about following the departmental model and feel that students will benefit educationally from this change.  We will be preparing students to follow the departmental schedule beginning on Monday, September 8th.  Students will be working both independently and in cooperative groups on numerous writing assignments, group projects and daily classroom work. Home assignments are meant to reinforce classroom learning and further student development.

We are in alliance with the PA Common Core Standards for English, Language Arts and Mathematics. The Common Core Standards have been adapted by the states in grades K-12 in order to help ensure that all students are college and career ready in literacy and mathematics no later than the end of high school.

As an aid to students and parents in this critical, transitional year, we have developed these policies

Books: All books must be covered and labeled. Textbooks should have a plain brown cover. The student’s name should be on the front. If a student is using a cloth book sock, please make sure that it is sized appropriately for the book. Please do not write anything inside the textbooks. All work books and consumable books should be covered with clear contact paper.

Supplies: Thank you so much for supplying the class with all of the requested supplies. Every student must come to class prepared with textbooks, copybooks, pencils, ruler and crayons.

Homework: Approximately an hour each night, study or written work will be assigned. This does include the student reading log of an average of 10-15 minutes per night. Students are also given time in class during non-study periods where they may record information in their reading log. Please review and sign homework books each night if possible. All assignments are to be neatly written and complete. Any incomplete work will be completed during lunch recess and 5 points will be deducted for each homework assignment not completed. Students will be bringing home tests to be signed and should return the tests signed within 2 school days. Homework assignments will be posted on the classroom website daily.

Discipline:Daily discipline problems will be handled in the classroom. Recurring misbehavior will result in a note or phone call from the teacher.

Academies: Numerical grades will be given for the first time this year. They are determined by tests, quizzes, projects, homework, and participation. Children will receive a grade on their report card in Art, Technology, Physical Education, Handwriting and World Languages. The following is an overview of the fourth grade curriculum:

Religion: The Ten Commandments, the Rosary, the Beatitudes, the Works of Mercy, the Virtues, prayers, along with an emphasis on making good choices.  I will be teaching Religion to all fourth grade students this year.

Math: We will be following the Common Core Standards.   Our Math Series is Go Math, which offers hands-on activities and focuses on specific real life problem solving experiences. This series has a consumable textbook and workbook.   I will be teaching all fourth grade students in Math throughout the year, with the exception of Honors Math Students.

Social Studies: Fourth grade Social Studies is the study of Pennsylvania's seven regions, physical features and how they affect how people live.  Mrs. Ireland will teach both fourth grade classes in SS.

Science: The curriculum will include the teaching of Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science. Weekly lessons are very informative and students will develop a hands-on approach to Science through weekly labs and experimentation. I will be teaching Science to all fourth grade students.

English Language Arts: Reading will be a balance of literature and informational texts with varying text complexity; Writing will have an emphasis on argumentative, informative/exploratory and narrative texts and also an emphasis on research; speaking & Listening will include both formal and informal talk; Language will value academic and domain specific vocabulary and an emphasis on the conventions of English and the effective use of language, together with Spelling.  Mrs. Ireland will be teaching all ELA classes to all fourth grade students.

Correspondence: The best way to contact me is by email. You can reach me through my school email at kfinke@stjpschool.org or through the school website at www.stjpschool.org. If you would like to contact me by phone, please contact me at the school office at 215-884-0843.

Classroom Websites: On the main website under classrooms there is additional information. A monthly update will be available to let you know what is going on in the classroom. A monthly calendar will let you know what tests and other important information is up coming. A homework page will be available for daily classroom assignments.

One of the blessings of Catholic education is being able to celebrate our faith. Your child will be better able to grow in the knowledge of God, when he/she sees you pray, and prays with you. We encourage you to share with your child on a regular basis the prayers of the Mass and of our faith, as well as the sacraments of Reconciliation. The fourth grade students will attend Mass every Tuesday and together as a school community on the First Friday of every month.

Thank you for your help this year and your continued support. Please never hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
