 New trend......."Smoking Hookah"

Hi,
Have you heard about the new phenomenon of smoking with the Hookah?  I have recently heard about this new trend from my Dental Hygiene association, and dental publications.  I will give you a summary of the information about what I have learned of this trend . Smoking the hookah is an ancient social ritual in the countries Turkey or India.  But now getting popular here in the states.  Hookah bars are popping up in our college towns.  Its becoming a place for young people to hang out with friends.  They see the hookah smoking as an almost clean alternative to the habit of smoking. The hookah is a large water pipe with a tube connecting to the base.  The user inhales through the mouthpiece that is connected to the tubing.  The type of tobacco or product used is called Shisha.  Its a combination of tobacco, a sweetener, and fruit.  The kids smoking this Shisha are believing it is safer than smoking cigarettes.  However, according to World Health Organization Advisory, even after passing through water, the tobacco smoke still contains high levels of carcinogens, including carbon monoxide.  It has three times the levels of nicotine increasing the risk of addiction.  The mouthpiece is also shared, therefore, passing infectious diseases such as herpes, oral bacteria, and respiratory infections.  The Shisha user is also at risk for oral, throat, lung cancer, and systemic complications usually related with tobacco use. The Dental Association is placing it more harmful then cigarette smoking.  So far the message or facts of this harm has gone unheard.  After reading these articles it seemed important to share and pass this message.   Please contact me if you have any questions.  Liz
