“EXCEPT IT BE FOR FORNICATION”

Regarding Divorce and Remarriage, Jesus said:

Matthew 19:8 “ … Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

Matthew 19:9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, EXCEPT IT BE FOR FORNICATION, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put
away doth commit adultery.

Many teachers are ignoring the clause “EXCEPT IT BE FOR FORNICATION.”

The word used in Matthew 19:9 for Fornication is PORNEIA so let’s see how that word is defined:

“FORNICATION - porneia - is used for illicit sexual intercourse … as it is used in Matthew 19:9 it stands for, or includes, adultery.” W. E. Vine

Read it like this for the complete meaning: "...and marry another committeth adultery EXCEPT IT BE FOR FORNICATION.

The man who divorces his wife for fornication can marry another and is not committing adultery. It must also be true that the wom
an who puts away her husband for fornication can marry another without committing adultery.

God is not against the woman whose husband commits adultery remarrying another man. We can see that in the Old Testament in that the man who committed adultery was stoned and his wife could marry another.

Deu 22:22  If a man be found lying with a woman married to a husband, then they shall both of them die, the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away the evil from Israel.

Deu 22:23  If there be a damsel that is a virgin betrothed unto a husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her;

Deu 22:24  then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them to death with stones; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbor's wife: so thou shalt put away the evil from the midst of thee.

Deu 22:25  But if the man find the damsel that is betrothed in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her; then the man only that lay with her shall die:

Deu 22:26  but unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbor, and slayeth him, even so is this matter;

Deu 22:27  for he found her in the field, the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to save her.

Deu 22:28  If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, that is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found;

Deu 22:29  then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he hath humbled her; he may not put her away all his days.
