     Read to Do (Learning & Obeying)

James 1:22  "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." NIV

  1. What does God say we are doing when we read the Bible but don't "Do what is says"?

 

James 1.25  "But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in itnot forgetting what they have heard, but doing it— they will be blessed in what they do." NIV

  1. If you want to be "blessed in what [you] do" what 4 things MUST you do with God's word? 

 

The goal is not just to read, but to remember ("not forgetting") and "Do[ing] what it says" by picking at least one promise, instruction, or example, LEARN it well, RESPOND to God about it, APPLY it, and SHARE it with others. 

 

Learn 

  1. Ask God for help in learning and obeying his word: Psalms 119:34 "Give me understanding and I will obey your instructions; I will put them into practice with all my heart." NLT
  2. TOK. Identify all we are to do. It includes what we are to trust (promises), Obey (instructions, and Know (truths).Commands, Promises, and Key Truths (by highlighting or underlining)
    1. Commands to obey: 
      1. Command include any instruction we are to do.
      2. Includes examples to follow or not to follow: (if it’s clearly taught in another passage).
      3. Anything that is made clear that God wants us to do (Rev 2:19)
    2. Promises to trust (promises includes the reason given for obeying a instruction)
    3. Key Truths to live by 
  3. Look intently at what you selected. Study as many as you can. ALSO use Study Bibles to learn them.

Obey 

  1. Pick one command, promise, or key truth to focus on obeying/trusting/ living by.
    1. Look at multiple Study Bibles on that verse to learn it well.
  2. Apply: Determine what will change
  3. Write at least one sentence as your response back to God. It could be in form of a prayer asking for help to do it or a prayer of thanks or a prayer of ... T
    1. The more effort you put on this the more you'll grow.
  4. Meditate 'day and night' on your last few applications (Psalm 1:2).
    1. Joshua 1:8 "Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful."  NIV
  5. Not Forget: Philippians 4:9 NLT “Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me-everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.“
  6. Share: Don't hide but share you application with others today:
    1. Psalm 78:4 "We will not hide these truths from our children;"  NLT
    2. Colossians 3:16 "Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another ..." CSB

 

P.R.A.Y. acronym - A Great way to end your time with God is by talking with God about your concerns and goals for the day.

  1. Praise & Thanksgiving Praise God for who He is (his attributes) and thank him for what He has and will do.
  2. Repent of the sins committed and the commands ignored.  Ask God to reveal your hidden sins to you and to help you not to sin. 
  3. Ask for the needs of others and yourself with faith, persistence, and patience.
  4. Yield to his will on my requests and schedule for today. (“Not my will but yours be done” Luke 22:42 NIV)

 

Highly recommended

  1. Read through the New Testament in a year (www.OneYearNT.com) to so you can yearly learn, review, obey and pray over everything Jesus has taught (Matthew 28:19-20).
  2. If you fall behind in your reading, do today's reading. Next year you'll be able to study the missed passage again.
  3. If you have time, read all of the ESV Study Bible study notes for today's reading. You will learn so much from reading the notes. Next year you can use a different Study Bible.
  4. Remember, doing no personal application today means you are only deceiving yourself (James 1:22). You are missing out today on having God‘s commands guide you and his promises to sustain you.
