Why memorize for Life? It's the only way you will be able to "Keep putting into practice" by "not forgetting ... but doing it":
Philippians 4.9 "Keep putting into practice all you learned ... Then the God of peace will be with you." NLT
James 2:25 "But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it— not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it— they will be blessed in what they do. " NIV
What does God promise those who "Keep putting into practice" by "not forgetting ... but doing it"?
If you want a life that God blesses you need to DO his word. But you can't DO his word if you forget it.
So, instead of forgetting super important verses that God has impressed on you, memorize them for life, so that you can remember them and by doing them let them change you.
The vast majority of committed Christians don't memorize because they once tried memorizing and failed at it and are now convinced that they can't memorize. Nothing could be farther from the truth! Here are 3 EASY keys to "memorize for life". If you CONSISTENTLY follow them God's word will change you as you (with God's help) "Keep putting into practice" what his word says.
If you fully do the following 3 keys to Memorize for Life
#1 Over Learn
First Week: At three different times each day work on saying the verse until you can say it word perfect. The first few times you'll have to work on the verse some until you can say it word perfect. But each time it'll take a little less effort.
The 'Over Learn' goal is to be able to say the verse out loud to others both perfectly AND quickly.
To memorize a verse word perfect start by repeating the first phrase until you can say it word perfect. Then keep adding the next phrase and keep repeating the phrases until you can say it word perfect.
For example, to memorize the first verse in "God's Promises"
Keep saying: "1. Everything You Need - Matthew 6:33" until you can say it word perfect.
Then keep saying: "1. Everything You Need - Matthew 6:33 - Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously," until you can say it word perfect.
Finally keep saying: "1. Everything You Need - Matthew 6:33 - Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. Matthew 6:33" until you can say it word perfect.
The only way to remember the verse reference with a verse is to always say the reference (Matthew 6:33) BOTH at the beginning AND the end of the verse.
Keep reviewing Matthew 6:33 until you can say it word perfect three different times each day for the first week.
Ask others to review you. You'll be surprise how much harder it is to say the verse to others.
BUT it will burn the verse deeper into your memory.
And they will identify any parts of the verse that you are not saying word perfect.
Remember, the 'Over Learn' goal is to be able to say the verse out loud to others both perfectly AND quickly.
You will fail to memorize the verse for life if at the end of the week you can't say the verse BOTH perfectly AND quickly. If it takes you a while to say the verse imagine how long it'll take you to review 12 verses.
If it takes you a long time to review your verses eventually you'll give up reviewing them and in a while you'll forget the verses.
#2 Over Review
Next 3 Months: Review the verse daily for the next 3 months.
As long as you can say the verses quickly this won't take more than 2-4 minutes a day.
Rest of Your Life: Then review it weekly for the rest of your life to retain the verse for life.
As long as you can say the verses quickly this will take very little time a week and you'll be doing Joshua 1:8!
#3 Over Use It
The more you use and obey the verse the deeper it's burned into your mind/soul. This is where you will receive the life-changing benefits of memorizing for life God's holy words. "Using" the verse includes:
Studying the verse by answering the following questions:
What does it SAY?
What does it MEAN?
How can I obey the commands?
How can I trust the promises?
How can I live by the truths?
Praying the verse by frequently asking God:
How well did I 'Do" the verse last week (obey, trust, live by)?
How I can 'DO' (obey, trust, live by) the verse better this week with your help?
Who needs to be hear what this verse teaches this week.
Others reviewing your verse. This also exposes them to God's word.
Teaching others the verse. Ask understanding type questions on the verse. This is the BEST way to teach them, because when they discover the answer themselves they will remember it MUCH better.
The Goal
Be transformed by memorizing and living the 12 "God's Promises" verses one or 2 verses a week.
