"By hearing"
Lyndon Conn wrote: “In a devotional time this morning, the question came to my mind: "Do you base you theology on your relationship, or your relationship on your theology?"
Lyndon added: “This thought came out of the idea of how many different doctrines are in the world today and the confusion it causes for many people. If we have good relationship with God, then theology should follow that relationship. And relationship will never be damaged by theology.”
Donna writes: Our relationship with God is based on FAITH THAT HIS WORD IS TRUTH. When God calls us, He gives us that gift of faith in His Word. The unity of the faith comes as people discard their opinions and accept the scriptures as their authority.
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved THROUGH FAITH; and that not of yourselves: IT IS A GIFT OF GOD:
Romans 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
“By hearing - Our translation has varied the expression here, which is the same in two places in the Greek: “Isaiah said, Who hath believed our report τῇ ἀκοῇ tē akoē? So then, you must admit that faith comes by that report ἐξ ἀκοῆς ex akoēs, and therefore this report or message is necessary.” When it is said that faith cometh by hearing, it is not meant that all who hear actually believe, for that is not true; but that faith does not exist unless there is a message, or report, to be heard or believed. It cannot come otherwise than by such a message; in other words, unless there is something made known to be believed. And this shows us at once the importance of the message, and the fact that people are converted by the instrumentality of truth, and of truth only.” Barnes.
