The Main Message of Jesus & The Bible

The Main Message of Jesus & The Bible

#1 Our Brokenness

We All Have Sinned - “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.“ Romans 3:23 (which means the book of Romans in the Bible, chapter 3, verse 23)

  1. Sin is NOT Doing —> "Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets." Matthew 7:12
  2. Sin is NOT Doing —> "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these. Mark 12:30-31

Results in Separation from God – “It’s your sins that have cut you off from God. Because of your sins, he has turned away and will not listen anymore.”  Isaiah 59:2

  1. Sin Deprives and Robs Us Of --> "Your wickedness has deprived you of these wonderful blessings. Your sin has robbed you of all these good things." Jeremiah 5:25
  2. But Jesus Wants To Do This For Us --> "Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light".  Matthew 11:28-30

And No Eternal Life – “Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son [Jesus] will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment.” John 3:36

  1. Most People Are Going To --> "You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it." Matthew 7:13-14
  2. End Result of Judgment Is --> "That is the way it will be at the end of the world. The angels will come and separate the wicked people from the righteous, throwing the wicked into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." Matthew 13:49-50

#2 God’s Redeeming Gift

Forgiveness of Our Sins – “There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.” Luke 24:47

  1. Salvation Comes Through --> "You will tell his people how to find salvation through forgiveness of their sins." Luke 1.77
  2. Forgiveness Comes Through --> "There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent." Luke 24:47

Eternal Life (instead of hell) – “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son [Jesus], so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

  1. Eternal Life Comes Through --> "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 6:23
  2. Three Results of Believing Are --> "I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life." John 5:24

Power for Incredible Life – “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” Galatians 5:22-23

  1. The Two Things God Will Give Us Are--> Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.  Philippians 2.12-13
  2. True Jesus Followers (live Jesus' way) Have --> The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.  James 5.16

Offer Is A Gift – “God saved you by his grace [undeserved favor] when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done” Ephesians 2:8-9

  1. It is a free _____ --> "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 6:23
  2. Saved By _____, Not By ______ -->  "Yet we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law."  Galatians 2:16
  3. Saved By _____, Not By ______ --> "he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit." Titus 3:5

Because Jesus Paid Our Sins – "Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.” 1 Peter 3:18

  1. What Jesus Did For Us --> - "Christ died for our sins [on the cross], just as the Scriptures said. He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said." 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
  2. We Are Made Right With God By --> (it's mentioned 3 times in this passage) "But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, ... We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood." Romans 3:21-25

#3 How to Receive God's Incredible Gift

Turn From Your Sins – “Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away. Acts 3:19

  1. Repent Means To - "That is why the Lord says, Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. ...  Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.  Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish." Joel 2:12-133
  2. Must Prove This --> "Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. ... every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire." Luke 3.8-9

Transfer Your Trust from what you have been doing to what Christ has done for you on the cross. “If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe [trust] in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9

  1. We Must Believe --> "Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said." 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
  2. Believing Means Transferring our trust from what we've been doing to what Christ has done for us on the cross (see Romans 3:21-25 and Galatians 2:16 above).

Follow Jesus (his example & teaching) – “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.”  Mark 8:34

  1. Learn and Obey Jesus' Teachings So That --> (this passage has 2 reasons why) "Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." John 8:31-32
  2. Our Lives Must Be Marked By --> " I tell you the truth, anyone who obeys my teaching will never die!" John 8:51
