Gelatin capsules, often referred to as soft gels are composed of an outer coating or shell which contains the active ingredient as well as any filler. The interior ingredients must be present in a liquid, paste or suspension, which contains small pieces of the active ingredient in the liquid. To ensure flexibility and strength the shell is typically made from gelatin.
