 A Richly Deserved Award (04/22/2016)

The Southeastern Arizona Governments Organization (SEAGO) Mobility Management Program was started from scratch in January of 2013 with a grant from the Arizona Department of Transportation.  The Regional Mobility Program's purpose is to assist our regional transit providers in meeting the transit/transportation needs of our citizens in a safe, reliable, accessible manner that maximizes the use of resources and minimizes the overall cost of rural transit services within the SEAGO region.

In three short years, the program has grown to be recognized as a statewide leader in mobility management.  The program currently has 28 agencies that participate in our coordination activities.  These agencies provided over 600,000 rides to the elderly, individuals with disabilities and the general public in 2015.  In 2014, we developed a regional training program designed to improve passenger safety and to increase the operational and administrative capabilities of our region’s small transit providers.  This program has grown substantially.  In just two years the program has grown from a regional program, to one that serves almost all of rural Arizona.

And the Regional Mobility Program continues to grow.  In July, SEAGO will be conducting a study that will explore the feasibility of an intercity bus service that would connect the Cities of Douglas, Bisbee, and Sierra Vista.  The study is expected to be completed by December.  If the study shows that the service is feasible, service may be available as early as January 2017.  The program is also working with a group of stakeholders to return transportation services to the Willcox area.

These accomplishments did not go unnoticed.  The Arizona Transit Association and Arizona Department of Transportation held their Annual Conference the week of April 11th, which included their 2016 Excellence Awards ceremony.  One of the most prestigious awards presented this year was Outstanding Mobility Manager.  The award recognizes an individual, organization, or group that has demonstrated outstanding mobility management planning and efficient administration of federal and state transit programs.  This year’s winner of the award was SEAGO’s Regional Mobility Manager, Connie Gastelum.  Anyone who has worked with her knows that the award was richly deserved.  Connie has been instrumental in the program’s growth and continued development, has become a true asset to our transportation community, and we at SEAGO are rightfully proud to have her on our team.

Any human services programs that wish to join our transportation coordination efforts, participate in our Transit Training Program, participate in the Douglas to Sierra Vista Route Study, or our efforts to return transportation to the Willcox area are encouraged to email Connie Gastelum at cgastelum@seago.org,  Jessica Urrea at jurrea@seago.org, or Chris Vertrees at cdvertrees@seago.org.
