93-YEAR-OLD KICKS OFF ONLINE PETITION DRIVE WITH WALK IN LAS VEGAS

Date: 10/15/2019

Four months after the relaunch of her 2016 grassroots walking campaign, 93-year-old Opal Lee of Fort Worth, TX will start the clock on her change.org online petition to garner 100,000 signatures in 30 days. Her goal – to show Congress and the Administration that there is cross-country support for a National Day of Observance commemorating the abolition of slavery as Juneteenth is celebrated in 46 states as an official day of observance.

Having walked in Michigan, Virginia, Oklahoma, Alabama, Mississippi, New Jersey and Houston, TX where she attended the third Democratic Debate giving four of the Presidential candidates information, Ms. Opal is in Las Vegas for the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation Convention. As a part of the activities, she will walk in Historic West Las Vegas for 2.5 miles on Sunday, October 20th at 2:00 PM starting at KCEP Radio located at 300 W. Washington Ave. She invites the community to come and walk a bit with her.

A board member of the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation (NJOF) since 1999, Mrs. Lee is giving it her all to ensure that the importance of Juneteenth as a unifying event is not forgotten. To sign the petition go to www.opalswalk2dc.com, or follow her journey on Facebook @opalswalk2dc or Twitter & Instagram @opalsw2dc.
