A: Early test versions of Amiga Forever 6.0 contain videos which are "encoded" (compressed) using MPEG-4 technology to save disk space while trying to preserve as much quality as possible. The videos stored on such Amiga Forever 6 CD-ROM are encoded using the MPEG-4 Advanced Simple Profile (ASP) and are stored in files having names ending in ".mp4".
The .mp4 video files can be played back either using a stand-alone player such as Apple's QuickTime, or by installing a third-party MPEG-4 plug-in codec for Windows Media Player. Microsoft itself favors its own Windows Media 9 format, and does not directly provide an MPEG-4 codec capable of playing back MPEG-4 video files.
The following is a list of MPEG-4 stand-alone players and player plug-ins:
- Apple QuickTime Player (for Mac and Windows)
- DivX Codec (for Windows Media Player)
- DivX Player (for Windows)
- 3ivx decoder (for Windows, Windows Media Player and Mac)
- EnvivioTV Player (for Windows, Windows Media Player and RealMedia)
- RealNetworks RealOne Player (for Windows, Mac and GNU/Linux/Unix)
- Dicas mpegable Player (for Windows)
- Dicas mpegable DS decoder (for Windows Media Player)
- Philips Platform4 PC Player (for Windows and PocketPC)
- IBM MPEG-4 Video for JMF (Java player for JMF-enabled platforms)
- ENST Osmo4 (for Windows)
- MPEG4IP MPEG-4 player (for GNU/Linux/Unix, etc.)
Please note that MPEG-4 is one of the formats used to store videos in test versions of Amiga Forever 6.0. Previous versions of Amiga Forever used the MPEG-1 format, and do not require an MPEG-4 capable player.
Because of the severe compromises which were required in order to retain compatibility with different MPEG-4 players, and given the recent availability of VC-1-compatible player software for Mac OS, and also in consideration of the endorsement of VC-1 by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, the DVD Forum and the Blu-ray Disc Association, the official release version of Amiga Forever 6.0 uses videos encoded with the VC-1 codec.

A: In order to save disk space while trying to preserve as much quality as possible, Amiga Forever contains videos which are "encoded" (compressed) using the VC-1 codec, originally developed by Microsoft as part of its Windows Media 9 (WM9) technology (where it was known as "VC-9" before being released as the "VC-1" standard by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers). The videos on the Amiga Forever 6.0 CD-ROM are stored in the "VIDEO" directory, and have names ending in ".WMV".
The video files can be played back with Windows Media Player 7.1 or higher on Windows, or with Windows Media Player 9 or higher on Mac OS X. VC-1-compatible players for Linux include Turbo Media Player by Turbolinux and Xine (which requires some original Microsoft DLLs).
The Amiga Forever 6.0 CD includes HighMAT data for HighMAT video compatible DVD players. Additionally, the Amiga Forever 6.0 CD is compatible with certain other DVD players that can play back VC-1 and WM9 content.
