(3) Realize my daily need for him - Matthew 5:3

(A) Matthew 5:3-10  "God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

4 God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5 God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.
6 God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied.
7 God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
8 God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.
9 God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.
10 God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs."

(B) Matthew 5:3  “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs."

(C) Luke 18:9-14 "Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else: 10 “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! 12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’ 13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ 14 I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

For Salvation

The 3 circle illustration from previous lesson.  The "Do You Know" pamphlet.

For today

Matthew 6.33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

Matthew 6.11, 12, 13  Give us today the food we need,

12 and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.
13 And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.

Phil 4.6-7  Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

4 God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Mourning is more than being sorrowful.

Mourning is good

Mourning is not taking sin lighty

  • 2 Cor 7:9-10 NIV  yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
  • Psalms 51:17  The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit.  You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.
  • Proverbs 28:13  People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.
  • Jeremiah 36:3 Perhaps the people of Judah will repent when they hear again all the terrible things I have planned for them. Then I will be able to forgive their sins ...
  • If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.” (Psalm 66:18).

Fear of God includes both (1) letting God down and (2) realize God will discipline from a loving Father who will not stop us from reaping what we sow.  Gal 6:7
