I’ve been writing short stories for a while now, and I feel like I’m stuck in a rut. My plots are fine, but the language just feels flat — like it doesn’t have color or movement. I want my readers to feel what I’m trying to show, but I’m struggling with how to bring that to life.

Same here, until I started intentionally using rhetorical devices. You’d be amazed how a well-placed metaphor or bit of alliteration can make a description pop. I found this guide that really opened my eyes to the possibilities: rhetorical devices. It’s not just for speeches — a lot of it applies beautifully to fiction writing and helps you play with rhythm, tone, and imagery.

Absolutely. I started experimenting with personification, giving the setting its own emotional weight. Like turning “the wind was loud” into “the wind howled like an old dog guarding the night.” Suddenly my world felt alive. These devices give you more than vocabulary — they give you tools for texture. Honestly, every writer should have at least a few of these in their back pocket.
