More homeowners are switching from gas furnaces to heat pumps, drawn by lower utility bills, cleaner operation, and rebates that can offset a large share of the cost. But one detail often gets overlooked until midway through a project: many older homes simply were not wired for it, and the electrical panel is where that surfaces first.

A heat pump pulls significantly more electrical load than a traditional gas furnace, especially when it is also handling cooling year-round. Homes built decades ago were typically fitted with panels sized for a smaller electrical footprint, long before central air, EV chargers, and modern appliances became standard. When a heat pump gets added to a panel that is already near capacity, the result can be tripped breakers, inspection failures, or a system that never performs the way it was designed to.

This is exactly why panel capacity should be checked before, not after, equipment is ordered. A proper assessment looks at the panel's rated capacity, existing circuits, and the added draw from the new system, then determines whether the current setup can handle it or whether an upgrade is needed. Skipping this step is one of the most common reasons heat pump installations stall midway or fail a city inspection.

Coordinating HVAC and electrical work separately often means two different contractors, two sets of permits, and two chances for miscommunication between trades. Having both scopes handled by the same licensed team removes that friction. The panel gets sized correctly the first time, wiring runs are planned around the equipment rather than guessed at afterward, and everything moves through permitting as one coordinated project instead of two overlapping ones.

Cost is often the biggest hesitation, but this is also where rebate programs matter most. Many Bay Area utility and state programs specifically cover panel upgrades tied to heat pump or EV charger installations, since the upgrade enables broader electrification goals. A qualified contractor can identify which programs apply to your home and handle the paperwork, turning what looks like an added expense into a partially or fully offset one.

If a heat pump is on your radar, an electrical assessment is worth doing early. Knowing whether your panel is ready, and what a possible upgrade would look like, means fewer surprises, a faster installation, and a system that runs the way it is supposed to from day one.
