I've been crafting handmade candles and soaps as a hobby for a while now, mostly giving them away to friends or using them myself. But after a few people started asking if I sell them, I thought maybe it's time to try it out as a small side hustle. I’m torn between putting them up on Etsy or trying to sell through local marketplaces or Instagram. Etsy seems bigger but more crowded, and the fees feel a bit much. On the other hand, local platforms might be quieter but maybe easier to build a following? I’m not looking to go full-time just yet, just want to see what’s worth the effort in the beginning. Has anyone tested both?

Yeah, I’ve actually tried both routes! I started out posting my jewelry on a local classifieds app and got a few orders, but it was really inconsistent. Once I switched to Etsy, things picked up, but it did take time to get noticed — competition is no joke there. The key for me was learning how to present my products and niche them properly. I found this article super useful while figuring that out — it’s not just about Etsy, but covers multiple ways how to make money online through different passions, including handmade stuff. What I liked is how it doesn’t just push one method, but gives you a feel for what works based on your goals. Might help you decide where your energy’s better spent.

Just came across this thread and wanted to say it’s really cool seeing people share about their handmade ventures. I don’t sell anything myself, but I do love supporting small creators, especially on local platforms. Sometimes it’s the personal touch that makes the difference, and I always feel better buying from someone in my own city. Good luck to everyone making things by hand — it’s such a great way to bring creativity into business.
