The best approach is to create a clear structure. Many players keep their highest tile in one corner. Smaller values can then grow around it. This makes the board easier to control.
Do not chase every available merge. A quick combination may look useful, but it can also break your layout. Check what happens after the tiles move. Ask yourself where the new tile could appear and whether enough space will remain.
Empty squares are extremely valuable. They give tiles room to move and create new combinations. Try not to fill the entire grid without a plan.
Another useful method is building numbers in order. Keep smaller tiles close to their matching values. This creates smoother combinations and reduces isolated numbers.
The most important skill is controlling the board rather than the score. A lower score with plenty of space can be safer than a higher score with a blocked grid. Good players think about future options before making attractive merges.
