How Do You Choose the Right Patio Door?

We're replacing an old patio door and are struggling to decide between sliding, French, and newer fiberglass door systems. Each option seems to have pros and cons when it comes to maintenance, security, insulation, and everyday convenience. For people who have already made this decision, what influenced your choice? Are there any features you now consider essential or things you wish you had paid more attention to before buying?

Are you doing the renovation without a designer? If yes, then I’d suggest at least looking at some references to understand how your ideas might look in real examples. If you need help with size calculations, I recommend the door dimensions guide, it explains pretty clearly what to look at, what to measure, and all that.

I'd say French doors do look really beautiful. But I would still go by the overall style of the house. If it’s something modern, sliding doors would be a better choice. And they save space too.

If you have a tight layout, a modern sliding system is a lifesaver. We almost bought French doors but realized they would constantly hit our outdoor furniture when open. Our new slider has built-in blinds inside the glass panels, which I highly recommend if you have pets or kids because they never get dirty or bent. Honestly, the installer matters more than the brand itself. We spent weeks figuring out where to buy windows Toronto and get professional installation? before finding a crew that actually leveled the frame perfectly.
