I wasn’t even planning to get involved this year

Man, I wasn’t even planning to get involved this year. I’ve been super swamped with work and just trying to keep our weekend squad together was already a chore. But then my younger cousin sent me a voice note like, “Bro, we have to register for 1xCup this year – prize is N20M!” And I was like, “Wait, what?”  Didn’t even realize they’d opened up registrations again on June 2. We joined two years ago just for fun – no high expectations. But it was such a wild ride. Played two group games, got smacked in one but managed a draw in the other. Still didn’t go through, but the experience was crazy – the crowd, the energy, all these teams showing up like they were in the Premier League. Our keeper even bought new gloves just for that, lol. Now the boys are buzzing again. We’re trying to scrape together registration fees and sort out jerseys. Feels like it’s all happening fast, but honestly… even if we don’t win, just being in the mix again would be.

Yeah, same here! We joined last year kinda last-minute — like barely made the cut — and I swear, that whole tournament lit a fire under our feet. It’s not even just the money (though, let’s be real, 20 million naira is no joke ). It’s the chance to play on an actual stage. That kind of exposure is huge for small teams like ours. We’re a bunch of uni friends who formed a team out of boredom during ASUU strike days. First few matches we were all over the place, but somehow we found rhythm. Didn’t make it past knockouts, but got approached by a small sponsor after — that felt unreal. What’s even more mad is how big 1xBet is behind this cup. I had no clue how deep their roots went until someone asked me "Is 1xBet owned by Russia?" — I looked into it and found this. Turns out they’re licensed in Curaçao now, and they’ve got partnerships with clubs like Barça and PSG, plus stuff with Serie A. Pretty wild considering all the noise back in the day. Now it seems they’ve gone fully global. My advice if you’re entering: don’t just focus on skill. Get your logistics right. Matching kits, someone to handle transport, and try not to fight with the refs even if the calls suck. That’s what cost us last time.

You know, sometimes I wonder if these tournaments are more about luck or planning. Like yeah, training and talent matter, but one red card, one bad ref call, or one guy pulling a hamstring can flip everything. I’ve seen teams train for months and still get knocked out in the first round. Then someone else who just pulled together a squad two weeks prior makes it deep. Wild how it goes sometimes.
