Last month, I flew through Turkey for the first time, and before the trip, I was really intimidated by the size of their new main terminal. It’s the largest airport in the world, where people regularly miss their connecting flights. In my mind, I was already picturing myself running with my bags through endless concourses. To calm my nerves a bit, I started looking for information in advance. I found the Istanbul International Airport website, which had detailed navigation instructions. The information there really helped me. You only need to look up, and do the obvious follow the enormous signs, suspended from the ceiling. All directions are indicated with the simplest pictograms and arrows I have ever seen, so I didn't even need to speak the language. If you want to reach the exit or even Baggage Claim, follow the arrow with a picture of a suitcase; it shoots you straight there. For transit passengers, there are even dedicated aisles with signs indicating the transitions, which really makes it a snap. The only difficulty is, you're going to have to walk a lot the distances between the gates can be quite substantial. Luckily, I think they put in the moving walkways to "encourage" passenger activity, which extend all the way through all that area. So, in I think about forty minutes, I passed through all the checkpoint screening and didn't get lost once. The important thing to know: don't be scared of this behemoth, because they actually have the logistics down pat for normal people.
