I’ve been working as a freelance web developer for several years now, and during that time I’ve managed to create and launch quite a few different projects—from simple informational websites to complex services. In my work, I repeatedly encounter a strange problem: websites covering completely different topics suddenly face regional blocking in certain countries or states. In such cases, the website owners I work with usually look for ways to retain traffic and turn to tools like retarget geo targeting service for help. This does help, to some extent, solve the problem of losing visitors, as it allows for the flexible redirection of users from blocked regions to alternative mirrors or adapted pages. However, as a developer, I still can’t fully grasp the nature of these blocks. To me, they often seem completely unpredictable, since the restrictions target resources that don’t contain any controversial, sensitive, or prohibited content at all. These can be ordinary educational blogs, productivity tools, or portfolios that contain nothing questionable. Please explain how geotargeting actually works and what technical mechanisms underlie geo-blocks. Why do these blocks occur even for “clean” websites—is this usually related to hosting providers’ IP subnets, DNS settings, or the specifics of regional firewalls? And exactly what parameters does geotargeting use to determine a user’s location so that smart routing works correctly?
