What should I consider when buying an abstract painting?

I have recently started looking for an abstract painting for my living room, but I quickly realised that choosing artwork online is more complicated than I expected. There are so many different colours, styles and sizes that I sometimes change my mind after looking at just a few pages. I am especially interested in something that can work with fairly simple furniture without making the room feel too busy. I also want to understand the difference between choosing a painting because I genuinely like it and simply following current interior trends. How do you normally approach this kind of purchase?

I would start with the room itself and think about the size, colours and amount of wall space available before looking at individual works. When I was researching options recently, I found it useful to browse an art gallery online first and save a few pieces that caught my attention. Looking at them again after a day or two helped me understand which ones I actually liked rather than choosing something impulsively. I would also check the dimensions and available information about the artwork carefully, since photographs can sometimes make a painting look larger or smaller than it really is. For me, finding something that fits the room and still feels interesting personally is more important than following a particular trend.

Thanks, I like the idea of saving a few options and coming back to them later instead of making a decision immediately.
