Festivals often bring a vibrant and passionate atmosphere, but there are also a few of them that make many people shiver, dare not come close and rather are really not for the faint of heart...
1. Thaipusam Festival – Malaysia
Thaiphusam festival is usually held in late January, early February, the time of Tamil month in the Thai calendar. Although it only lasts for 3 days, this colorful festival is a period of strict vegetarianism to skull high top commemorate the gods who have contributed to the destruction of evil.
This festival is sure to make many people shiver by the various types of torture of the participants. The image of a person with iron nails, iron hooks, stuck in the body, through the flesh paraded everywhere is something you will definitely witness when attending the Thaipusam festival.
2. Phuket Vegetarian Festival
The name of this festival will probably make many people mistake this as a peaceful occasion with gentle and quiet activities. However, this annual Phuket Vegetarian Festival is world famous for its painful executions everywhere.
Torture or suffering according to Thai Buddhists will bring luck, success in career, health and peace to family and self. Therefore, at this festival, visitors will have to shiver when witnessing that healthy men will fast and use all sharp objects from knives, hooks , piercings to hammers, axes, swords to pierce through.
3. Sun Dance Festival – North American tribes
The Sun Dance Festival is held annually at the time of the summer solstice, which is especially important to many North American Indian tribes. This festival lasts for 4 - 8 days, starting in the evening and also ending at sunset.
Sun Dance is one of the meaningful sacrifice rituals for the indigenous people. Also known as the bloodthirsty festival, here, participants will have to endure physical pain such as jumping continuously without eating or drinking, confronting buffalo, piercing iron through flesh.
4. Memorial Ceremony of Imam Hussein - India
Imam Hussein - grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, and 72 companions were killed by the enemy in a 7th century war in Kerbala.
On this holiday, men use whips tied with sharp knives and beat themselves in the back. The image of blood on the backs and faces of the participants will surely haunt those who have witnessed it.
5. Mesabatan Ap Festival – Indonesia
The activities of the Mesabatan Api festival symbolize the purification of the body before the time of fasting and meditation. Usually takes place in March every year in the village of lashing, Gianyar area of the island of Bali.
On this occasion, Hindu men will tattoo hawaiian shirt strip naked and throw flames from dried coconut shells at each other's bodies. This action caused serious burns, horrible burnt patches of skin, but the people here still enthusiastically participate in the festival tirelessly.
