I’ve recently started paying more attention to what competitors are doing with Google Ads, and I’m realizing that it’s much harder than simply searching for a few keywords and looking at the ads that appear. Some competitors seem to have very polished campaigns, while others appear to target completely different search terms or use messaging I wouldn’t have thought of. I’m particularly interested in understanding how people research competitor keywords, ad copy, landing pages and possible gaps in their own campaigns. Is there a practical process for doing this without spending days manually checking Google results?

Yes, I think the key is to approach it as structured research rather than just searching random keywords. I usually start by identifying the main competitors, then look at the search terms they appear to target, the wording used in their ads and where those ads lead. It can also be useful to compare offers, calls to action and landing-page messaging because sometimes the biggest insight isn’t the keyword itself but how the competitor turns that search into a conversion opportunity. I recently found this Google Ads competitor analysis guide useful because it explains the process in a more organised way. I still think the findings need to be checked against your own campaign data, but it’s a good starting point for building a repeatable research routine.

Thanks, that’s exactly what I was looking for. I like the idea of comparing the whole journey instead of only looking at competitors’ keywords.
