I recently started learning more about Nintendo Switch emulation and keep coming across different terms for game files. One thing that confused me at first was the distinction between cartridge-based images and installable packages. I have seen people mention NSP and XCI in the same discussions, but I wasn't sure whether they were simply two versions of the same thing. I am mostly interested in the technical and preservation side of the subject, especially when it comes to backing up games that I legally own. Could someone explain the difference between these formats in simple terms?

The terminology can definitely be confusing when you first get into the subject. An Nintendo Switch ROM is a general term people often use when discussing game images for preservation or emulation, although technically there are several different types of software packages and images. XCI is generally associated with cartridge content, while NSP is commonly associated with installable software packages. The way an emulator handles each format can depend on its implementation and the particular title. If you're researching this topic, I'd recommend looking at emulator documentation and preservation resources rather than random file-sharing sites. It's also important to work only with game backups you are legally entitled to create and use.

Thanks, that finally makes the terminology much easier to understand.
