NEW COVENANT FULFILMENT OF JEREMIAH'S PROPHECY
NEW COVENANT FULFILMENT OF JEREMIAH'S PROPHECY
WHAT IS “NEW” ABOUT THE NEW COVENANT?
1. A new sacrifice. • OLD - Sacrifice of animals • NEW - Sacrifice of the Messiah
2. A new method of administration. • OLD - through the Priest • NEW - through Holy Spirit
3. A new place to write the law of God. • OLD - Tablets of stone • NEW - Tablets of the heart
BOTH THE OLD COVENANT AND NEW COVENANT WERE MADE WITH ISRAEL
Jer 31: (Speaking of the New Covenant made with Israel)
Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant……But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Heb 10:15-16 (Speaking of the New Covenant made with Believers)
15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
A TRUE JEW (ISRAEL) = CIRCUMCISION OF THE HEART -NOT THE FLESH
Rom 2:28-29 28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
Rom 9:6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:
(Gentiles can join themselves to the Lord and become Israel)
Isa 56:6 Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant;
THE ORIGINAL COVENANT WITH ISRAEL WAS THE TEN COMMANDMENTS – WITH NOTHING ADDED!
1ST COVENANT MADE WITH ISRAEL AT MT. SINAI:
Deut 4:13And he declared unto you HIS COVENANT, which he commanded you to perform, [even] TEN COMMANDMENTS; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.
Deut 5:22 These words the LORD spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: AND HE ADDED NO MORE. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.
Note: This covenant (The ten commandments) *DID NOT* include the book of the Mosaic law for it had not yet been given.
2ND COVENANT WITH ISRAEL MADE AFTER THE FIRST WAS BROKEN BY TRANSGRESSIONS:
Deut 29:1 These are the terms of the covenant the LORD commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in Moab, IN ADDITION to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.
Note: This Covenant *DID* include the Book of the Mosaic Law WHICH WAS ADDED BECAUSE OF TRANSGRESSIONS
Gal 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? IT WAS ADDED because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made;
THE NEW COVENANT WITH ISRAEL (BELIEVERS) DOES NOT INCLUDE ALL OF THE MOSAIC LAW.
IT IS A RENEWAL OF THE SAME LAW AS THE ORIGINAL COVENANT -> SIN IS DEFINED BY THE TEN COMMANDMENTS.
1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
OLD COVENANT PROPHECY ABOUT THE “LAW” (Jeremiah)
Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
NEW COVENANT FULFILMENT (Hebrews)
Heb 10:15-16 15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,
This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
OLD COVENANT = LOVE GOD AND NEIGHBOR:
Deut 6:4-5 4Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
5And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
Lev 19:18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself:
NEW COVENANT = LOVE GOD AND NEIGHBOR:
Luke 10:27-28 27And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself. 28And he [Jesus] said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
OLD COVENANT AND NEW COVENANT ARE THE SAME = LOVE GOD AND NEIGHBOR
OLD COVENANT (Deuteronomy) Deut 10:12-13
12And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
13To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?
NEW COVENANT (Luke) Luke 10:27-28 27And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself. 28And he [Jesus] said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
HOW DO WE LOVE GOD? -> WE KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS!
I Jn 5:3 3For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
John 14:15 15If ye love me, keep my commandments.
John 14:21 21He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
OLD COVENANT OR NEW - THE COVENANT FOR ETERNAL LIFE IS BUILT ON THE SAME INSTRUCTIONS; LOVE GOD BY KEEPING THE TEN COMMANDMENTS AND LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR AS YOURSELF.
As our Lord was teaching in Jerusalem, one of the Pharisees who was trained in the law of Moses, approached Jesus and attempted to test Him with this question:
"Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"
Jesus said to him: "What is written in the Law? How do you read?" The lawyer responded from the books of Deuteronomy and Leviticus:
"You shall LOVE the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself."
Jesus agreed with him and said: "DO THIS and you will live." Luke 10:25 RSV
The “Rich Young Ruler” asked the same question: (Matt 19:16f)
“Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?”
Jesus Replied:
“…if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.”
The “Rich Young Ruler” asked him “which commandments”
“ He saith unto him, Which?”
Jesus quoted from the Ten Commandments and said,
“Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. “
When asked: What must I do to have eternal life? the Messiah said to one man: “Love God and neighbour” and to the other He said: “keep the commandments and love your neighbour”.
The answers those two men received were not different. To “Love God” and to “keep His commandments” are synonymous in both The Old Covenant and the New – and that is the Covenant God makes with His people.
Harold Kupp
“Fear God and keep His commandments for this is the whole duty of man.” Ecc 12:13
