HOW CAN ONE KNOW WHEN WE HAVE THE INDWELLING HOLY SPIRIT?
QUESTION: How can one know when we have the indwelling Holy Spirit?
ANSWER: we know that we have the indwelling Holy Spirit and are born-again when we have the power to SIN NOT. The apostle John said:
1 John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
The Holy Spirit comes to dwell in our spirit; therefore, the Holy Spirit’s presence is not determined by emotional-physical sensations of the flesh.
From the lives of the disciples we also learn that spiritual signs and wonders are not a sign that a person is converted; that he is born-again and has the indwelling Holy Spirit. (Remember, Judas cast out demons and healed the sick--but he was always a son of perdition!)
JOHN 20:20-22 (When the apostles were born-again)
The apostles of Jesus healed the sick and cast out demons in the name of Jesus; but they did not have the indwelling Holy Spirit until after Christ's resurrection:
"In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)" John 7:37-39
On the evening of His resurrection Jesus breathed upon the disciples and they received the indwelling Holy Spirit. That was when they were born-again and became a new creation!
"...He showed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. 'Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.' And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, 'RECEIVE YE THE HOLY GHOST.'" John 20:20-22
