THE SABBATHS OF ANCIENT ISRAEL
THE SABBATHS OF ANCIENT ISRAEL
The Jewish calendar is lunisolar; that is, the months are reckoned according to the moon, and the year of twelve or thirteen months, according to the sun.
THE SEVENTH DAY SABBATH
The seventh day sabbath is according to the sun. It is from sunset of the sixth day to sunset of the seventh day. The seventh-day Sabbath is one of the Ten Commandments. Under the new covenant, it is the duty of the people of God to keep the Sabbath * Exodus 20:8-11; Leviticus 23:3; Hebrews 4:9
LEVITICUS 23:3 refers to the seventh-day weekly Sabbath: “Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.”
THE FESTIVAL SABBATHS
The festival sabbaths are according to the moon. The Festal year begins with the new moon of Nisan.
LEVITICUS 23:4-44 refers to the festival Sabbaths.
THE CEREMONIAL SERVICES OF THE SABBATH DAY HAVE BEEN ABOLISHED
We cannot rightly divide the word of truth if we do not understand that after ancient Israel made the golden calf, they had two separate laws: 1. The Ten Commandments. 2. "The yoke of bondage" that included circumcision, the food laws, the feast days and all the washings and sacrifices of the ceremonial law. The scriptures teach us that “the yoke of bondage” was a temporary law until the resurrection of Christ:
Galatians 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? [the yoke of bondage] IT WAS ADDED because of transgressions, TILL THE SEED SHOULD COME to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
In the temple service, of the "yoke of bondage", special offerings and sacrifices were required on the sabbath days --the scriptures teach us they were a shadow of things to come ...
Num 28:9 And on the sabbath day two lambs of the first year without spot, and two tenth deals of flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil, and the drink offering thereof:
Those ceremonial services of the sabbath day have been abolished with the entire "yoke of bondage."; but we must still obey The Sabbath Commandment because it is one of the Ten Commandments.

NOTE:
* In addition to the Greek and Latin manuscripts of the New Testament, there is a third text called the Peshitta. The Peshitta is from ancient Eastern manuscripts written in Aramaic, the natural language of Jesus. Hebrews 4:9 in the Peshitta text reads:
"It is therefore the duty of the people of God to keep the Sabbath."
