(B2) Matthew 4:17 "From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."  ESV

Beatitudes 5:3-12

  1. God put this first
  2. ESVSB - “They are called “beatitudes” from Latin beatus, “blessed, happy” These short statements summarize the essence of the Sermon on the Mount. Blessed: More than a temporary or circumstantial feeling of happiness, this is a state of well-being in relationship to God that belongs to those who respond to Jesus’ ministry.”
  3. LABC - The Beatitudes describe how Christ’s followers should live. Each beatitude tells how to be blessed. “Blessed” means more than happiness; it means singularly favored, graciously approved by God.
  4. CBC - Structurally, each of the beatitudes is composed of a statement of who is blessed (“blessed are the poor in spirit,” etc.) followed by a statement of why the person is blessed (“for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven”). First the character of the blessed person is highlighted, and then the promise of God to that person is explained.
  5. Jesus’ 8 super key ‘be attitudes. The 8 top character traits (attitudes - “be” attitudes) to have and their rewards
  6. Only ones he made easy to memorize

  2. Luke 18:9-14  "Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else: [10] "Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. [11] The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: 'I thank you, God, that I am not like other people-cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I'm certainly not like that tax collector! [12] I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.' [13] "But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, 'O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.' [14] I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."  NLT
    1. What is the difference between what the Pharisee and the tax collector asked God for?
    2. Why was only the tax collector justified before God?
  3. Romans 3:25 NLT - For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood.
    1. What works must on
  4. Acts 3:19 NLT - Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away.

(5:5) Humble = Focus on the Interests of Others -- Consider Others More Important - Matthew 5:5 "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth."  NIV

  1. Ephesians 4:2 "Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love."  NLT
  2. Meek, Gentle
  3. James 4:6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows grace to the humble.”.

Humility is the key to getting more grace. If we want to abound in grace then humility is a passageway.

Humility is also the key to loving more. The more humble I am the more I am in a position to love someone else. The more I focus on me, the less I am able to love others. Jesus is our supreme example. In John 13 He gave the example of washing the disciples feet. In His day that would have been a very humbling thing to do. From ch. John 13-18 He uses the word love many times. He loved them to the end.

If I am able to get all my needs met by God, it sets me free from focusing on myself and able to look out for and meet the needs of others. If I want to be a better lover, and receive more grace, humility is a key to getting there.  Dave Webster Nov 17 email on MAC
