*Matthew 5:01-02

(A) Overview of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapters 5-7)

  1. This Was Jesus' Standard Sermon: "In my opinion, the Sermon on the Mount was Jesus’ “standard” sermon. It was the core of His itinerant message: a simple proclamation of how God expects us to live, contrasting with common Jewish misunderstandings of that life."   David Guzik Bible Commentary
  2. It Tells Us How to Live
    1. "Jesus expounds the reality of discipleship lived in the presence and power of the kingdom of God but within the everyday world. ...  these teachings, rightly understood, form a challenging but practical ethic that Jesus expects his followers to live by in this present age."  ESV Study Bible
    2. "In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus ... tells us how we will live when Jesus is our Lord. ... It is important to understand that the Sermon on the Mount does not deal with salvation as such, but it lays out for the disciple and the potential disciple how regarding Jesus as King translates into ethics and daily living."   David Guzik Bible Commentary
  3. This is What We Are to Pass On: "Yet we can also regard this as Jesus training the disciples in the message He wanted them to carry to others. It was His message, meant to be passed onto and through them."   David Guzik Bible Commentary
  4. What Jesus Promises at End of This Sermon
    1. Jesus' Positive Promise - Matthew 7:24-25 "Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. [25] The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn't collapse, because its foundation was on the rock."  CSB
    2. Jesus' Negative Promise - Matthew 7:26-27 "But everyone who hears these words of mine and doesn't act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. [27] The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. It collapsed with a great crash."  CSB
  5. Those who don't live by Jesus' teachings will experience Jesus' negative promises in v26-27.
  6. This study will help you to BOTH Learn and follow on Jesus' teachings in his Sermon on the Mount so you will experience Jesus positive promise in v24-25.

(B) Matthew 5:1-2

[1] When he saw the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and after he sat down, his disciples came to him.

[2] Then he began to teach them, saying:  CSB

  1. Jesus primarily addressed the Sermon on the Mount to his disciples (committed followers) and not to the crowds (uncommitted followers).
  2. Jesus' Disciples had already repented in Matthew 4:17 "From then on Jesus began to preach, "Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near."  NLT
    1. "Jesus started his ministry with the very word that people had heard John the Baptist say: Repent. The message is the same today. Becoming a follower of Christ begins with repentance, turning away from our self-centeredness and self-control. The next step is to turn the right way, to turn toward Christ and believe in him."  LABC
    2. "To repent, or “change one’s mind,” in the OT called for a change in a person’s attitude toward God that impacted one’s actions and life choices; it involved the idea of “turning,” that is, from one way of thinking and living to a different way."  ESVSB on Matthew 3:2
    3. "The opening word of this first sermon sets the tone for Jesus’ entire earthly ministry (cf. Luke 5:32). Repentance is a constant motif in all His public preaching. And in His closing charge to the apostles, He commands them to preach repentance as well (Luke 24:47)."  MBC
