Understand the other scriptures on the same topic. Scripture NEVER contradicts scripture.
(B1) Take the Hard Way to Heaven - Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. (14) For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” ESV
In v13 underline Jesus' command. And in v13-14 circle why he commands that.
According to Jesus where are most people going (‘many’ vs ‘few’)?
ESV Study Bible: 'leads to destruction' in v13 means "ultimately to eternal punishment and separation from God.” (hell)
ESV Study Bible: ‘leads to life’ in v14 means eternal life.
MacArthur Bible Commentary: "Christ continually emphasized the difficulty of following Him. Salvation is by grace alone, but it is not easy. It calls for knowledge of the truth, repentance, submission to Christ as Lord, and a willingness to obey His will and Word."
(B2) Strive to Enter God’s Kingdom Luke 13:23-24 “And someone said to him, “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them, (24) “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.” ESV
In v24 underline Jesus' command. Circle the reason for the command.
The Gospel of Matthew commentary by France: "'Are those who are saved few?'; the answer is clearly meant to be Yes."
MacArthur Bible Commentary: "Strive: This signifies a great struggle against conflict."
From John Wesley commentary: "Strive as in an agony. So the word signifies otherwise none shall enter in. Barely seeking will not avail".
ESV Study Bible: "To be “saved,” one should strive to enter through the narrow door. This involves repentance (Luke 13: 3, 5) and faith (Luke 8:12)."
(B4) How? In the next 3 paragraphs Jesus gives the 3 requirements of the Hard Way to Heaven.
