Matthew 7:21-23

Return to Matthew 7:13-27

(D1) Jesus Must Be My Real Master - Matthew 7:21-23 “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. (22) On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ (23) But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’”  NLT

  1. In v21 underline the only ones who will enter heaven. (this verse explains what the difficult road is)
  2. In v23 underline why the ‘many’ are told by Jesus “I never knew you. Get away from me”.
  3. ESV Study Bible "An oral confession of Jesus as Lord does not always indicate a repentant heart. ...  False disciples may exercise power in Jesus’ name but their activities are meaningless because they deceive themselves and other believers, desiring attention for their own spectacular displays. Mighty works are not proof of the Father’s will since they can come from sources other than God, including demons and human contrivance"
  4. CSB Study Bible "True disciples affirm Jesus’s lordship, submit to his authority, and obey his commands.  Jesus insisted that a person is confirmed as a true disciple not by prophecy, exorcism, or working miracles but by living a transformed life made possible by God.  The disobedient lifestyles of lawbreakers are inconsistent with genuine discipleship. Jesus’s words, I never knew you, show that these were never truly disciples."
  5. John MacArthur on Romans 2:6-8  "Although Scripture everywhere teaches that salvation is not on the basis of works ..., it consistently teaches that God’s judgment is always on the basis of a person’s deeds ... The deeds of the redeemed are not the basis of their salvation, but the evidence of it. They are not perfect and are prone to sin, but there is undeniable evidence of righteousness in their lives."
  6. v22-23 people started out with Jesus as Lord but then went back to living for themselves.
  7. What those who call Jesus Lord must do: Luke 6:46 "Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?" ESV
  8. It’s when we obey Jesus’ commands that are hard for us that gives proof that Jesus is really our Lord.
  9. A good test: 1 Peter 4.2  “You won’t spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God.”  NLT  Are you more focused on your own desires or the will of God?

(D2) Serve Only One Master - Matthew 6:24 "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money." ESV

  1. Matthew 4:10 "Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only." NIV
  2. Jude 4 "The condemnation of such people was recorded long ago, for they have denied our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ." NLT

(D3) ”Who My Master Is” Test - 1 John 2:3-4 "We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. (4) Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person." NIV

  1. Acts 26.20  "I preached that they should repent and turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds." NIV

(D4) How to Make Jesus Your Real Master (Lord) - Mark 8:34-37 "Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. (35) For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. (36) What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? (37) Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?"  NIV

  1. In v34 underline the three things MUST one do to be a disciple of Jesus.
  2. In v35 underline the two things one must lose their life for.
  3. In v35-36 underline what happens to those who don’t lose their life for Jesus and the gospel.
  4. Believer's Bible Commentary: "There is always the temptation … to make one’s own choices, with self as the center of everything. There is no surer way of losing one’s life. Christ calls us to pour out our lives for His sake and the gospel’s, dedicating ourselves to Him spirit, soul, and body. He asks us to spend and be spent in His holy service, laying down our lives, if necessary, for the evangelization of the world. That is what is meant by losing our lives. There is no surer way of saving them."
  5. v34 “deny themselves” means total surrender to all of Jesus’ will (his instructions).
  6. v34 “take up their cross” means to even embrace suffering if that is necessary to do all of Jesus’ will.
  7. v34 “follow me” means to learn and follow all of Jesus' instructions.
  8. How are you doing on Jesus’ three requirements in v34?
