Matthew 7:24-27

Return to Matthew 7:13-27

(E1) Be Careful to Obey All - Matthew 7:24-27 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. (25) And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. (26) And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. (27) And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”  ESV

  1. Underline what we are to do. And circle his promise for those who obey, and for those who don’t obey.
  2. The Gospel of Matthew by R. T. France pg 296 "... has left Jesus' hearers with a simple but demanding choice: to hear and ignore, or to hear and put into practice.  It is a make-or-break choice with eternal consequences.  And as we noted in v21, it is Jesus himself who is the key to this choice; it is his words (and not, as one might have expected, God's words) which must be done.  … The total collapse of the house with a bad foundation probably suggests that, as in v21-23, the final judgment is particularly in view, but that setting is not emphasized, and the imagery applies equally to the testing [trials] which discipleship will repeatedly encounter before the final consummation."
  3. ESV Study Bible “The evidence of whether one is truly a believer is in whether one does the words of Jesus (cf. James 1:22–23 and 2:20–22).”
  4. John MacArthur’s “The Lordship of Christ” sermon “It’s what you do with Jesus’ words that gives evidence of your spiritual condition. ... What is the evidence of true conversion? What is the evidence of true repentance? It is a life of obedience, submission to the lordship of Christ. It’s not a profession. It’s not empty words. It’s obedience. ... “
  5. How many of Jesus 50+ commands/instructions in the Sermon on the Mount do you want to obey?
  6. You’ll learn and start to benefit from obeying all 50+ commands by completing this free Bible Course.
  7. Would you like to start? For the next 3 weeks you’ll learn Jesus’ pocket guide to life (the Beatitudes).
  8. A sign of a true Christian is not wanting to obey some, but a desire to learn and obey all

(E2) Obey All - Matthew 28:19-20 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (20) and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” NIV

  1.

(E3) How to Obey All- Joshua 1:8  “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful." NIV

  1. Must Live on God's Word - Matthew 4:4 "Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." NIV
  2. Everything Depends on Being Careful to Obey - Deuteronomy 12:28  Be careful to obey all my commands, so that all will go well with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is good and pleasing to the LORD your God. NLT
  3. Keep Obeying All - Philippians 4.9  "Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me ... Then the God of peace will be with you." NLT

(E4) What Hell is Like - Matthew 18:8 "So if your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one hand or one foot than to be thrown into eternal fire with both of your hands and feet."  NLT

  1. Underline Jesus’ command in this passage. Circle how Jesus describes hell.
  2. ESV Study Bible: "Jesus uses hyperbole (intentional overstatement) to emphasize the necessity of rigorous self-discipline and radically removing sin from the disciple’s life before it leads to judgment". This Sermon on the Mount Bible Study will help to develop the rigorous self-discipline to remove the persistent sin in your life.
  3. From this article in gotquestions.org: "The variety and symbolic nature of descriptors do not lessen hell, however—just the opposite, in fact. Their combined effect describes a hell that is worse than death, darker than darkness, and deeper than any abyss. Hell is a place with more wailing and gnashing of teeth than any single descriptor could ever portray. Its symbolic descriptors bring us to a place beyond the limits of our language—to a place far worse than we could ever imagine."
  4. 3 part sermon series on Heaven & Hell (Oct 28, Nov 4, 11 2018) by Craig Groeschel (of Life.church)  on "Life After Death - One Minute After You Die".  The videos are here:  Part 1, Part 2, Part 3.
