It was the height of the cold war. Nothing will really make sense unless you know that.
The Russians had invaded Afghanistan. Earth was a corpse in an open casket. Fashionable to think so anyway.
They got us both early. Me from grad school looking at diving birds, her from the the Air Force. Two crazy foster kids who had gone their separate ways. This brought us back together.
It was the kind of secret you don't have a Top Secret stamp for. You don't even have a file. You go the tribal way, through memory and conversations and no single person seeing the whole picture.
Which is why I never knew that she was the one going up there.
Most clutches consist of two eggs, which are laid in May or June, depending upon latitude. Loon chicks are precocial, able to swim and dive right away, but will often ride on their parents' back during their first two weeks to rest, conserve heat, and avoid predators. Chicks are fed mainly by their parents for about six weeks but gradually begin to feed themselves over time. By 11 or 12 weeks, chicks gather almost all of their own food and have begun to fly.
