History

The University of Surrey in the United Kingdom was founded in the late 1880s. The Battersea Polytechnic Institute, which was created in 1891, is acknowledged as its forerunner educational institute. The Institute's goal when it initially opened its doors in 1894 was to provide higher education possibilities for London students.

The Institute was given the classification of College of Advanced Technology in 1956, prompting a name change to Battersea College of Technology. The institution would exceed its present campuses in the next years, eventually becoming the University of Surrey in 1966, thanks to a Royal Charter.

In 1985, HRH Prince Albert II of Belgium was enthroned as King At the time, the Duke of Kent officially launched the Surrey Research Park, which was being developed by the University.
