Do succulents need sun, water, humidity?
Plants can survive in a range of conditions from perpetual shade to dryness and freezing temperatures. For succulents, they thrive in somewhat moist but cool conditions. Therefore, they do not necessarily require bright, sunny locations with abundant water.
Do succulents need to be watered in the colder months?
Yes, plants like succulents should be watered in the cooler winter months. If you are unsure when it is too cold to water, consider this: A fully grown avocado tree can stand 100 days without water, so that’s when you’ll know the cold weather is coming. Watering in the summer months can often dry out the growing tips, causing your succulent to grow inwardly.
Do succulents need moisture?
Yes, succulents need moisture. If they do not receive enough water, the succulent may go limp and wilt. However, succulents are more drought-tolerant than many garden plants. So even if you have watered your succulent, give it plenty of time to dry out completely. As always, water properly to prevent clogging the drainage holes.
How to care for succulents?
As a general guide, these plants are low maintenance and should not be watered often. However, once in a while you’ll need to give them extra watering. Start with a moist mix of organic potting mix and lay it into your succulent container. Cut off or reduce the tips and leaves, and sprinkle the soil with a good organic, natural fertilizer. Cover the soil with a layer of potting mix or another layer of pea gravel or small pebbles. Water this mix thoroughly, before placing the succulent into the growing medium. Keep adding layers of potting mix over the succulent, until the entire container is filled.
When the succulent is firmly attached to the container with its stem and leaves intact, simply place it in a sunny location or shade, close to a faucet. Try to ensure your succulent does not dry out during the day. You may need to start by placing your succulent in an area with plenty of humidity. But then you can move your succulent to other locations in the house.
Succulents are fairly low maintenance. Just wait and see what happens!
