Pacquiao Faces Lawsuit Against Paradigm, Fight vs Spence Jr. in Peril

Manny Pacquiao's bout against World Boxing Council (WBC) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. may not go forward.

According to The Athletic's Lance Pugmire on Sunday, Pacquiao is facing a breach-of-contract lawsuit from Paradigm Sports, which wants to refund a $3.3 million advance and an injunction to halt the Pacquiao-Spence fight on August 21 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada (Philippine time).

Audie Attar, the president of Paradigm Sports, filed the case in Orange County, California, alleging that Pacquiao breached his contract with Paradigm by not fighting four-division champ Mikey Garcia. Pacquiao, 42, joined with the sports agency in February 2020. He has a 62-7-2 record with 39 knockouts.

According to the complaint, Paradigm Sports was under the assumption that Pacquiao would sign the agreed match only to have the only eight-division world champion declare that he would instead face Spence Jr. hours later in May.

Paradigm said that it was never engaged in the Pacquiao vs Spence Live bout, despite owning the sole rights to arrange Pacquiao's following two fights. Garcia's time with the aforementioned sports agency was likewise cut short as a result of the development.

Pacquiao said on Noli Eala's Power and Play show on Saturday that Garcia was definitely one of his last three options for his next opponent. Spence and WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford were the other two.

According to the complaint, Pacquiao and Paradigm were pushing for a four-fight contract with DAZN, beginning with a battle versus Garcia in the first of two fights in Saudi Arabia last year.

With others, including Pacquiao's longtime adviser and president of his Manny Pacquiao (MP) Promotions Sean Gibbons, undermining it, Attar went on to organize a Pacquiao bout versus Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) star Conor McGregor, who is also under Paradigm, according to the complaint.

However, due to McGregor's defeat to Dustin Poirier in January of this year, the planned bout did not go through. This opened the door for Paradigm to push for a Pacquiao-Garcia rematch, but the boxing senator of the Philippines eventually chose to face the 31-year-old Spence Jr, who has an unbeaten 27-0 record with 21 knockouts.

"Pacquiao's violations of the agreement thus entitle Paradigm to monetary damages (and) expenses connected with this action, including but not limited to lawyers' fees and... injunctive relief," stated Paradigm lawyer Judd Burstein in the complaint.

According to the complaint, one of Pacquiao's breaches of contract was that he should not compete again for Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) unless the opponent was Floyd Mayweather Jr., who beat him by unanimous decision in 2015.

According to the complaint, Gibbons and buddy Winchell Campos persuaded Pacquiao to return to boxing management Al Haymon's PBC and negotiate a pay-per-view deal with Spence.

Pacquiao, according to Paradigm, caused irreparable harm to company image.

"In addition to the millions of dollars in direct economic harm that Paradigm stands to incur, the damage to its image as a consequence of Pacquiao's breaches is immeasurable," Burstein said in the complaint.

"Pacquiao has shattered Paradigm's image as a boxing representation just when the company was on the verge of establishing itself as a significant factor in professional boxing."

Manny Pacquiao vs Yordenis Ugas

On Saturday night, a welterweight title will be up for grabs in the latest boxing TV event. Manny Pacquiao, an ageless wonder, will be taking on Yordenis Ugas, current WBA titleholder. This is the main event for Pacquiao's title that he won two years ago against Keither Thurman. After Errol Spence Jr., WBC and IBF champion, was forced to withdraw during training camp with a torn retina, Pacquiao will now unify his titles.

Ugas vs. Pacquiao could be better than Pacquaio against Spence, even if it is less of an attraction at the box office. Ugas is still one of the most prominent stars in the sport, and Pacquiao is still one of the top fighters in the loaded welterweight division. Ugas desperately needs another chance to fight one of the big names in the division.

Caesars Sportsbook offers all the information you need about Pacquiao vs Ugas Live. It's the best way to spice up a big fight evening. With this card, we'll give you some options with picks for both the main event as well as an undercard clash featuring familiar faces. Let's have a closer look at these picks.
